Way way back around 2003-2005 I bought bikes for £100-£200 with a month of MOT and rode them into the ground.

2006 I bought a 7 year old CBR600 with 22000 miles on it. Which cost me about £1500.

Today I am looking at 2006-7 bikes and with 20000K on them and they are looking for £2500+ at the very least equivalent to my CBR.

While 2001-2002 era bikes equal to my old CBR are £1500~2000.

While there are of course dreamers....

Is inflation really that bad?

Used bikes certainly appear to be holding their value a lot better, but I don't think it's all down to inflation.

The increased cost of newer bikes due to exchange rates, and the fast new bikes aren't that much better probably has a bit to do with it as well.

TLDR, it's not that simple.

Hi

Value of the pound went through the floor, hence UK bikes were cheap compared to the rest of Europe and a LOT of 2nd hand bikes went abroad. Hence far smaller pool of older bikes now.

Compare this with ~2007 when the pound was worth a silly amount and we'd had a decade of dirt cheap new bikes (initially from the parallel imports).

All the best

Keith

Bingo. There are still a lot of used bikes going out of the country too. There's someone I know of who sends 40-50 Harleys a month over to Scandinavia.

Also bear in mind that new sales have been low for a few years. No new bikes sold today = no used bikes for sale in 2 years.

And yet the only interest I've had shown for mine in four weeks of it being on Gumtree is a bloke wanting to swap it for his ZX9R.

A mate reckons it might be the hot cams putting people off. I've reduced the price from £3k to £2750, with offers invited. Not a tickle.

Confused

Could be that the geezers with money are increasingly gay for cruisers and Ewan-and-Thingy bikes, could just be that UK buyers can't afford to pay cash for UK bikes. "Income" means nothing without prefixing it with "disposable".

It took me nearly two weeks to shift my Burgman, and even though it was offered at a relatively low price, most of the interest was anonymous chancers "offering" half of what I was asking. The Enfield that replaced it was also cheaper than most, but the chap hadn't had a sniff of interest.

There seems to be a gulf in what sellers are demanding, and what buyers are prepared to pay.

The Fireblade? the one with your bird in a bikini on it? I could be interested.

Apart from what mentioned above the fact it's still the beginning of the season means the prices are pumped up.

For that very reason I'm in no rush to buy one. I've got cash but I'm not willing to pay asked prices. I'm waiting for something decent for reasonable price to appear.

You're a wee bit late, I sold that one in 2008. The one I'm selling now is a ZRX1100.

I would have thought 2750 is quite a lot for the 1100 model, even if it is in the 'right' colours. I'd be looking for a 1200 for that kind of money (I know they keep their value well but...).

Hard to put a value on that bike. You're asking dealer money, or significantly more than this one, although less THAN THIS MENTALIST.

Should have gone with the bikini.

It's priced towards the top end due to what it's got. It's not aimed at the stock-bike types, it's more for ex rocket-riders who would almost certainly take a stock one and soup it up. Mine's already souped. Hot cams, wider rims, full Ti pipework, fork internals, frame and fork braces, Arata rear-sets, custom swing-arm, brand-new EBC front discs and blah blah blah. So they pay a bit more but save more than that by not having to buy the bits themselves. Or so my logic goes.

Neither of those are even close to the bits mine has.

True, but you're looking for buyers who want and are prepared to pay for all those bits.

Gumtree may be a bit local for that. I'd go eBay, with bikini. Daughter's more or less legal now, right?

Your logic is flawed. Take off as many bits as you can and sell them separately - they add very little value to the bike.

Any "upgrades" is money wasted when it comes to selling the bike/car. People don't care. They just want to buy it as cheap as possible.

If I had a choice of low mileage unmolested standard bike and high mileage modified one for the same price I would go for the standard one.

Modified bike is fine, but I would not pay extra (unless I was after a track bike).

The logic's not flawed, as I am aiming at bikers who want a hot version of my bike. And these types of hooligan bike are pretty popular (Zed-type 'muscle' bikes with go-faster goodies and a loud mouth).

I'm pretty sure Gumtree can be filtered for "National", so I'm not sure regionality is the issue?

Stick it under 'parts & accessories' on eBay, a lot of people seem to be doing that now to bypass the ridiculously high price for advertising a vehicle on there. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up People interested in ZRX's (as you mention, there are a lot of them) could be interested in buying the bike and breaking it for spares or returning it to standard.

Your logic isn't flawed in that sense, but the market for a bike as tricked out - and thus as expensive - as yours just has to be smaller than that for a stock bike, right? And if there're fewer potential buyers you'll have to wait longer. Seems reasonable to me that it will take more time to sell.

Well, yes, I've certainly come to that conclusion. I'm not going to renew the ad again, I'll keep the bike and give it the occasional blat when the mood takes me.

I'm sure too (is how I found) but as you've noted, BCF denizens are exceptional. I've only ever used Gumtree to search for local bargains, for local cheapskates.

eBay is national by default.

I burned my last Ebay account (had it for seven years) because I decided enough was enough on their obscene piss-taking fees (I owed them £56 that they didn't get). I'll never sell anything through those scum again.

Indeed. They both - ebay and paypal - take like 1/5 of your money. I will never sell anything expensive on there.

I sold parts of my ZX6R for over £1k, then I had to pay ebay and paypal £200. Daylight robbery.

eBay classifieds for bikes are still just about OK though.

How do you figure that? Listing fee, paypal fee, ebay final value fee. Three fees. They can go fuck themselves, the fucking leeches.
