Your mate had to come in and get you out of shit that you started.

You annoyed somebody by moving his beer, and then told him to go fuck himself, instead of just saying sorry you didn't realise it was his.

Yeah, not the best way to handle a situation even if he was being a twat. So much aggression on both parts! Very rarely, is any fight in a pub or wherever worth it.

You say you refuse to be intimidated, but surely laughing it off with a shrug of the shoulders and walking away is the least intimidated you can be, you've barely registered him as a threat. If he then follows, then you can step things up a little.

I would change your attitude or you will eventually find yourself in a world of pain one day when you dont have your bodyguard around.

If its happened more than once recently then look no further than the mirror to see who needs to change.

You were in the wrong yet decided to start playing the big guy....im guessing ONLY because you knew you had back up. This my friend is the weakest of the weak and one day you will get found out.

A pub fight is never a level playing field.....you can be Mike Tyson, but a swift glass in the face changes everything and potentially can ruin your life.

The tougest thing to have done would be to singly apologise, say it was a mistake and move on and enjoy the night. Creating enemies is never a good thing.

kind of answered your own question? why risk your job for a silly punch up over nothing

next time send warped in to besmirch the guy with a mighty welders throat punch.

I completely agree and normally this is what i would have done...In fact did do the last time. I know that arguing back and been aggressive was the wrong thing to do. I'm also well aware that he could have been a prize fighter and whipped my arse.

I don't rely on my friend to protect me. I never asked him or expected him to step in for me.

It's just not worth it nowadays man.. People that start trouble so easily like that generally have little to lose, or they're just retards..

If your job relies on it, or you're just a normal person that doesn't see the point in fighting over petty situations, just defuse it and walk away.

I thought mark had logged in to his account when I started reading it.

Then realised the story was missing 15 ninjas, a 142 throat punch combo and an 8ft geyser of shit.

story probably genuine

Thumbs Up

If you're not going to back-up your big-talk then do the sensible thing in future and keep your big mouth shut. Otherwise you may not always be so lucky.

Certainly genuine lol Again I don't claim to be a prize fighter, hard man etc I'm just a normal quiet bloke. I wouldn't have said what I said if I didn't expect a fight. And yes I would have backed up what I said however it would have been him who threw the first punch!

I didn't start the thing..... Probably didn't help it but I certainly never started it.

Well...technically you did start it. You moved some blokes drink. He probably thought you did it on purpose to be a dick a told you as much. But instead of apologising for the 'error'...you decided to get confrontational.

So yes, you did start it. Albeit inadvertently.

I don't think there was any need to apologise.

I think all you needed to say was "I didn't realise it was yours, chap."

It just needed a statement for you to keep you on one-man-to-another scenario.

Using an anger-deflector (i.e., like mate or chap) means you shouldn't need to apologise, although if you had spilt the pint down his bird's cleavage, then yeeah, maybe a sorry would have been in order.

No need for apology, or for that matter, doing passive-aggressive things like calling him "mate" to keep the situation calm.

An apology - the Brit-response to any untoward situation - immediately puts you on a back foot. You're passively admitting you are in the wrong, even if you go on to deny that you are.

Plus, telling him to fuck off etc was probably a pointless piece of machismo, and reduces you even further down the "defensive" ladder.

Well, so you say.

Look, you got called out and chose to hide behind your big mate. Just own it. You're not the action hero of this drama. At best, you're the plucky comedy relief.

Like others have said, you should have just apologised and said you didn't realise the beer was his.

I've recently fallen out with a long term friend as when he's had a few he tends to get a bit cocky. He is soft as shit but once he's had a few he likes to get himself into situations knowing that I can defend myself, so I'll be able to defend him.

It got so annoying that once he'd sobered up one night after I'd shoved someone away after reacting to my mate being a dick, I told him that I may sound old fashioned but I'm the kind of person that thinks a fight should be fair. If 2 people want to go for it, they can do, without anyone intervening. If my mate gets his ass handed to him, then that's that, same if he gave the guy a beating. But the only time I'd ever jump in would be if my mate was randomly attacked or if he had the shit kicked out of him and was then getting stamped on while on the ground or if it was just genuinely going too far.

He didn't get the message, so we now no longer speak.

You have every right not to let people intimidate you. But acting cool and just saying sorry would have shown you had bigger balls.

What else are people supposed to base opinions on when you ask for advice?
