Are some helmets chunkier than others or are they a general size? Ive got a Lazer Tornado and to me on my shoulders it looks pretty big but it could be just im used to looking at myself with it on.

Cheaper helmets use a universal shell and pad out the different sizes with different amonts of filling. More expensive helmets (eg Arai) make a different shell for each size.

No, helmets are designed to protect you from an impact of up to 15mph. Faster than that and it is in the lap of the gods.
