I have been a car driver since 1977 apart from a couple of 3-4 month adventure's riding a nice little 50 cc scooter to and from work. But simply because of the rising cost's of car Insurance and considering that I only use the Astra for getting to my local asda shop, I realise that I can make do with a little 50 cc scooter with a decent size carrier box. I do think bikes can be a dangerous form of transport but, finances takes priority. This is not to say I don't enjoy riding, I loved it! I just don't fancy coming off Sad

Anyway I am going to back on the road on a fizzy Smile within the next couple of month's.[/b]

Depending on you commute a 125 (with CBT and L plates) might be better.

50cc IMO are fine for a city commute and short bits of 40mph. Get to dual carriageways, NSL single roads and the like then they're a hazard.

I'd say suck it and see if it's right for you on a 50cc.

Best of luck. Good someone else is on 2 wheels Thumbs Up

the most unsafe I've ever felt on two wheels was on a 50cc scooter, and I only went 'round the block', seriously, think about a 125.

125cc scooters can go faster, that's a plus point. and can be super economic with MPGs getting close to 200!

Going to have to ask you for a source on that one.

Yeah; having gone through your old posts from 2011 on, and your adventures with 50's... FFS you aren't a chuffing school-boy! GO do a bludy CBT course, and get a 125 or do a DAS and get a big-bike!

You have been pigging about on 50's, de-restricting mopeds so they aren't mopeds, but illegally registered motorcycles; grumbling about them still being slow, light and flighty, scary in the rain, and asking all maner of other silly questions, like whether a 100cc scooter is still a 'moped', or if you really 'need' a CBT, to which the answer is, if you have to ask YES you bludy do! DL196 cert might not be a legal requirement but the LEARNING you get on a compulsory basic TRAINING course, is obviously going to be helpful!

STOP playing at it! GO spend a little money (of the huge saving on your car insurance); get some lessons, get a licence and THEN,. with a ride what you like licence, guess what, you can 'ride what you like' and if that's still a 50 fine.... BUT with a little learning opportunity to ride something a little more 'substantial' like, oooh, a Honda CD200 Benley, with a wopping 15bhp and 80mph top speed, and about t THE cheapest thing you can insure with two wheels and a number-plate.. might find it slightly more comfy than your scary scooters and 6th-form GP bikes! But the LEARNING to get there is what you need, NOT another fucking fifty!

I actually read that.
One of Tef's shorter posts.
It all made sense! Shocked

TL;DR stop messing about, do CBT minimum, doing DAS is better, get bigger bike, not a 50cc.

I'd have to agree with the 125 vote, but by all means get a 50 if it's just a 1 mile trip to the shops. You may well find that you enjoy riding, rather than just getting to the shops for your frozen peas. In that case you may well decide that the 50 is too slow and too wobbly in high winds. You'd benefit from the CBT course anyway - there are things in life that you don't know you don't know until you're told them.

He already has, he's had three 50's since 2011, and asked all manner of stupid questions about riding them that would have been answered by a CBT course; done the commute, done the sunny-day outings, and obviousely still likes it; its old dogs & new tricks though; chap JUST doesn't want to have to take the tests!

Am I getting close to the nub here cosmos? Whats the problem; its not the money, is it, you just dont want to 'go back to school' and have to sit there like a wrinkled old crone in front of spotty teen agers, being told to do stuff by blokes younger than you.. getting closer?

If that's your fear; DON'T; they have just put DAS age up to 24, and the average age of the 'new motorcyclist' is now closer to 40 than 17. MOST 'students' at bike school will be in the same boat as you; older, having driven cars for many years, and worried about looking fooling in front of the 'kids'... who daftly, probably wont even be there!
