Well, it was bound to happen at some time or another wasn't it.

Went down Tuesday night after some muppet pulled out on me on dual carriageway (they were in slow lane going 40ish and i was in fast lane going 70ish) and as i braked, the front wheel went down on the wet road. 40 or so metres on i got up (well, actually as i was concious throughout it all i heard "GET OFF THE ROAD BEFORE SOMEONE RUNS YOU OVER" screaming through my noggin) and got to the central divider and stared at my hands. Could see my right thumb was buggered but that was about it. Eventaully someone stopped after some 30 cars went past oblivious and more interested in getting home (it was rush hour) and called the police while i sat in their car breathing heavily.

Got to hospital, went into surgery for my thumb and they cleaned it up. lost a nail, some skin and broke the tiny bone at the end into 3. Slept. next day they took another xray and found out my wrist was also boken so got me plastered up and left me there for another day.

Yet to find out the damage but it leaked oil over the road and was running when it went down. obviously the fairings are screwed and the handlebar snapped too. looking at it later.

has it put me off bikes...hell no! Wish i could get back on but as my thumb is wrecked, I can't use the trottle. If opnly it was my left wrist.

To those who have also crashed, do you keep replaying it in your mind too? Now need new helmet (Shark RSF2i - saved my life probably though the visor did fly off on impact which is a bit worrying), new gloves (Hein Gericke Pathan VI - fell apart and left me grated), jacket (Triumph denim style one - zip tore open, lost all the pressstuds, rode up, ripped but armoured elbows and shoulders probably helped), jeans (£14 from Makro! Cheap, crap, already ripped to start, lost the knees and the left rear pocket), long johns and boxers!

Will send pics when i get them and let you all know the damage and ask if it's worth fixing or breaking it for parts and getting something else. BTW, the car that pulled out didn't stop. Could have been worse, least i didn't hit it - but then could have claimed on their insurance...i'm only tpft

Fun and games. Now off to lie down as the codine is kicking in and getting dizzy.
R

Edit: Got asome road rash on my knees, right kidney area and left bumcheek too

Glad to hear your alive - not that you need to hear this but - god only knows what would have happened if you had a car up your arse!

You might want to look at new trousers and jacket that zip into each other to prevent the jacket riding up when sliding.

This will sound like a stupid question but aside from surprise what did it feel like sliding over tarmac at xmph? Smooth/rough?

Glad your ok, my other half had an accident at 65mph last year, luckily he was wearing all his gear, again his helmet saved his life as he travelled some distance down the down on his head Crying or Very sad, again he was lucky that no over cars where coming the opposite way.

That wrist is gonna be the worst bit to get over, so hope you fix quickly.

Bugger.

Unfortunately in such cases it is probably often better to hit them.

This way they either have to stop or at least are left with a dent which should make them easier to find Smile.

Unfortuately your mind rarely thinks "don't slam on the brakes really hard incase I slide'.

If there is a lot of damage done to the bike, you may be able to persue a claim for an uninsured loss because the other driver failed to stop. All depends on the circumstances I suppose, others will know more about this kind of thing but there IS a fund run by the insurance industry to cover non-fault losses against uninsured/absent parties.

Sounds like your kit failed quite badly in doing its job. I have walked away from a 70mph slide uninjured and would expect to do so again providing I didn't hit anything (wearing the same equipment as the last time). Many of my mates have too and have not suffered any major damage to their kit. I would have expected some scuffing and perhaps the odd lost pop stud, for a zip to tear off in a crash is totally inexcuseable on a bike jacket.

I will refrain from pontificating about the jeans because I wear combats on my bikes in the summer but you KNOW why you have road rash on your arse.

To be quite honest, I would consider taking the fecking gloves back to HG and having a go at them. If they fell apart at that kind of speed I would be pretty pissed off as I assume they weren't cheap.

I don't have flashbacks about my accidents but have given them careful consideration to determine what I did wrong and how I can prevent it happening in the future. Be rational about it, it has happened and there is nothing you can do about it now.

Enjoy the drugs.

Sorry to hear that mate, at least you are relatively alright.

As for playing the accident over and over in your mind, I know what you mean. Some parts of my nasty one I couldn't remember at the time and for a few days after. Then bits and pieces started to reappear, not all of it was missing only the actual impact and the flying over the bonnet of the car. I was actually conscious through that part but I seemed to have blocked it out. I think the replay part happens so that you can analyze what happened in detail and try to sort it all out.

Oni - I've only ever been down the road in leathers and it was fairly smooth feeling. It probably depends on the accident and what you are wearing at the time. I also had a bag on my back which sort of kept me stable and sliding along on my back and side. I even managed to stand backup as I was stopping sliding, mainly because of how angry I was and wanted to get back over to the twat that just turned into me.

Hi mate, you may of seen my thread about my crash. I keep trying to play it back in my head but only because I've got little to no memory of my crash..... that kind of bothers me more as I'd really like to know what happened.

No sprains?

I was wearing jeans on my crash too, was doing about 35-38 (guess). The only place my jeans looked roughed up was were I had a lighter in my pocket. It seems anything in your pockets grinds your trouser-wear into the road, possibly causing it to fail!

Hard luck with the gloves, that is terrible, bet your thumb was not pretty eh?

I wanted to start a poll just to see how many people have crashed this winter.... seems to be a lot and all for silly things too.

Hope you get well soon bud. Any traffic cameras? The other person caused the accident, I don't think they should of left the scene.

I have slid on my arse in leathers and it was pretty smooth. You just get an impression of "Shit, I am actually going quite quickly for someone sitting on his arse on a road, hope I don't hit anything. My buttocks are getting rather warm.".

Also gone down the road in cordura which is a case of earth-sky-earth-sky and tucking your arms and head in 'till you stop rolling, you do stop a lot more quickly than in leather though. This reduces your chances of hitting something solid but you feel a bit more splatted and stretched after a tumble.

Ouch indeed! Glad to hear you are (relatively OK). I can't believe the driver didn't hear or see you crashing so definitely worth looking into what stinkwheel said about claiming something.

It's called the motor policies bureau and all the insurance companies pay into it so that poor sods who are insured, but are involved in hit + runs / accidents where the other party isn't insured, still get paid out.

Andy had to claim from them when the guy who smacked him off his bike didn't have insurance. I think he got the details from his insurer, so that'd be the best place to start. You should be able to claim for injuries as well as material loss.

Argh! This makes my blood boil! It is bad enough causing a crash, but then to drive off is just plain wrong! Evil or Very Mad

Glad you are ok though. Karma Thumbs Up

Bah, wish I'd thought of that! Not to mention the horrible flakey skin. When it got wet, it came off like lumps of bread. Sick

Hope you recover quickly Mantzy, and that you don't need titanium bits and pieces stuck in it. Your biggest annoyance once the 6 or so weeks in a cast is up will be that you'll be very weak and inflexible in that arm. Six months after mine, I think my wrist is more or less back to normal, but I'm still weaker than I was before, as well as permanently losing range of movement. Sad

If it's the radial styloid or scaphoid broken I'd make sure that the upper end of your radius isn't fractured too, though I'd really hope it'd have been checked before.

As for replaying it my mind, I just wish I knew for definate what happened (or even knew anything about other than what I've been able to piece together from how the bike was found and a single witness statement). I'm not sure if it's a blessing or a curse being knocked out and having amnesia to be honest. The visor on my helmet vanished (shattered) too, only the hinges were anywhere to be seen afterwards apparently!

Codiene is the stuff of the devil! It makes you constipated to buggery and back! (At least you don't end up eating much hospital food though Smile ) Life will be intensely frustrating with one arm and you'll get really sick of the cast, the drugs, the physiotherapists (sadists! Evil or Very Mad ) and being incapable of doing anything. Here's hoping it's all bearable, that there's no need for operation and that you make a rapid recovery. Thumbs Up
