OK, so I've been on at the boy to get his brakes sorted for a little while now and have finally got through to him..

Problem is, it has taken them getting to this stage to get him to understand.

I am sure that this is a tad beyond serviceable as is the piston from the caliper.

New pads have arrived and caliper service kit on order along with new disk (no photo available).

Upside is that he has had to walk for a few days, for obvious reasons and hopefully has learned the importance of routine maintenance.

The disk is scored to buggery, hence a new one on order, will try to get a pic over the W/E.

It is on bread, because obviously if it were on toast, it could be mistaken for cheese,

Sell it to the Tate, I mean if Salvadore Dali could flog a telephone with a French stick in place of the receiver then why not.

A mate of mine said the back brake on his Fazer was making a funny noise.

I thought it was pretty worn but nowhere near as worn as yours. Well done.

Close enough to drop the fluid out of the caliper.

I think changing the pads earlier would've been a a darn sight more frugal.

I'm sorry but you would have to be plain stupid not to notice you've worn through the pad and the backing material down to the piston...

I'm sure it would make a horrendous noise and have terrible braking.

Do people just think you buy a vehicle and it runs forever until a pre-determined date where it breaks and you buy a new one?

You'd be surprised. Or possibly not. Yes, lots of people seem to think that.

I'm constantly berating some of the muppets at work for ignoring basic maintenance tasks that eventually (always) cost them more in the long run... and yet they still don't listen!

I'm reminded of my lad's Varadero. Ran back pads down and the front iffy. Not as bad as OP though. Still resulted in replacement rear disc (worn and warped) and front disc (worn). Varadero front discs are like rocking horse poo to get 2nd hand so had to bite bullet and get new. Turns out original Honda cheaper than aftermarket offerings.

Just hope he has learnt a lesson and basic maintenance and checks worth doing. Although he always argues has no money for such stuff. Yet still disappears with mates for pub/cinema/whatever.

In the past, in my young and stupider days, and on cars, I've waited until the telltale metal-on-metal grinding before immediately changing the pads. The discs were fine.

It takes a special type of person to ignore that obvious grinding (and vibration) and carry on... until things get that bad.

Lad (sirdash95) I sold my 1997 Bandit too said the back brake stopped working and was making a grinding noise Rolling Eyes cooked the brake fluid but the piston & disc were just to say use able.....pffft! Least I get paid for fixing the mistakes all these incompetent morons make.
