Ok, so ive been on ebay looking at what i can get for around the £2k mark in September.

This is killing me as its just making the cravings worse having not owned a bike in a shade over 3 years!

I was thinking of another early R1 or possibly another 636.

Every now and then i have a look to see whats going for around the 1k mark and well, its mostly shit.

Then there is the VTR's. Not pretty, but not the ugliest thing in the world. This could be outweighed by a couple of meaty race cans that sound like thunder.

Ive never had a twin though, and the only twins ive ridden are of the 500cc variety.

I know about the CCT problem, i know there not as nimble as anything more sporty and i know they have around 100bhp so hardly going to set the world on fire.

BUT, would they make a good choice to see me through the rest of the 'summer' and in to the next year?

It wont get much use, i have a company car so no commuting. It will just be for evening blasts and weekends when i dont have the kidlet.

Theres one ending tomorrow, currently on a shade over £800 with 30k miles on a R plate i think.

Advise me please, oh BFC! Should i just wait till september and get something i actually want or get this now and continue saving?

They drink fuel and are bland to ride.

I used one for a day, 150 miles = 2.5 tanks of fuel. It was just a meh bike in all honesty.

Back when I was 16-17 and only allowed to get a 50 or 125 before I passed my test, all I ever saw while bike hunting was excellent condition big bikes for £1000-1500 and 50's-125's being £1500+ for something decent.

Now I have a full licence, all them good deals have disappeared and all I see now are 50's and 125's going for £500-1000 and it's really irritating Laughing

Back on topic though,

Supposed to be a bit like a bandit of the thou twins. Decentish bike and reliable. Just not particularly good at anything but still pretty versatile as an all-rounder.

I loved my Storm and only got rid of her because she was just not practical for town riding and very thirsty. Typical V2 engine, low revs and bags of grunt and will easily top 130+.

Can be a bit lumpy around town, but on the country roads it was bags of fun. OK so it does not handle as well as the sports bikes etc but it copes well enough with everything I threw at it.

Long motorway journeys are OK on her too. I found at 80 it was far more economical on fuel, (Honest officer).

Chalk and cheese bikes, you'll either love it or hate it, those that love it tend to keep it (I will own another) and there is a whole forum dedicated to the bike full of people who have owned from new.

Things to watch out for are Regulator/rectififer and Cam Chain Tensioners, Both seem to be a serious weak link. Reg goes and new battery, CCT fails and its new engine time.

I've had two. I like them. It's a simple and effective design.

Let's face it, 100bhp is still very fast, and there's plenty of grunt throughout the rev range. The suspension is a bit basic but it holds the road well. I think they're actually quite fun and can be ridden as fast as most things. You just need to accept that it's not a Fireblade/SP, and never will be.

V-Twin Bandit is a bit harsh. More like a stripped down, more characterful VFR800. They're actually built and finished very nicely. Slightly more sporty, and every bit as practical as a VFR IMO.

The trick is finding a nice one. They're getting on a bit now, and tend to be very well used and/or neglected.

Doesnt sound too bad as a stop gap in all honesty.

Anything other bikes worth considering?

I've just bought a very well cared for 2000 plate for a very, very, good price as a week end toy. 21,000 miles, full service history, mot history, few nice extras as well. It is a thirsty beast round town, but I've done some fast A & B roads and some town commuting this week and I've got 118 miles before low fuel warning came on, 16 litre tank of which 2.5 is reserve. I can live with that as a toy. Bags of torque and grunt, handles quite well, plenty of power as far as I'm concerned, Sitting at 75mph in top gear at 4,000rpm or thereabouts is quite relaxed. I quite like mine, if your near me (London E6 ) your welcome to come and have a look.

TLS shoddy rear end rotary suspension earned the bike the nickname Widomaker.

TLR fixed the problem but added weight and with both they suffer Suzuki corrosion although not as bad as the SV does.

That said. The SV1000 is a nice bike. Laughing

TL was boring to ride, wasn't as scary as they made it out to be, even without the steering damper.

If you like VTR's or TLS Suzuki's then get one, the prices are good secondhand for a nice one. But don't get either as a stop gap bike IMO. If you like these bikes or V-twins generally you'll appreciate their quirks and charms, but they have annoying niggles like many other bikes and if your not really into them other than wanting something cheap, you stand to be disappointed etc.

Unless it was a commuter bike for a purpose or you need cheap wheels fast, then I'd rarther not have a bike than buy something that I wasn't really interested by IMO.

For me the storm is all about the torque, almost as much as a S1000RR or a blade, oh and of course the noise!

There are times when I get bored with mine, had it for nearly five years, but when I hear it through the race cans Yeah!!

Mine had 8000 miles on it and a full dealer history, a few extras and was £1700.

Here's my 2000 model, torque as said is immense on these, its a bike I really like, tank range is poor but that's not what its meant for, its not a commuter or work horse its supposed to put a smile on your face. V Twin, you either like them or hate them, I like them.

I really liked mine, value for money I think they are spot on to be honest.

With a set of cans they sound the nuts too!

That said, I've just bought a Mk1 Tuono for £2350 with just 11k on the clock. Can't wait for it to get here this weekend, like you, I've been out of the game for a few years.

I don't think you'd do wrong to try a Firestorm, if you don't like it, just sell it, you shouldn't lose anything on it...

Ok so whilst I've been looking about not really sure I've stuck a few cheeky offers on various bikes. One of the first ones I did when I first made this thread was on a 98 firestorm advertised for 1400, he's just accepted my offer!

Ideally it needs some loud cans, seat cowl and a belly pan (prefer them this way) and it should be a nice bike! Silver with 30k on the clock. Due a mot but offer of 950 was accepted. Does have a scratch on the tank so may replace that. All depending how I get on with it.

So, watch this space!

This man talketh sense. The Firestorm forum is still an irregular haunt by myself. Its full of a great bunch of people who will help with every aspect of the bike.
