My shorter 10 day trip using the Santander Ferry twice and also a fine by the cops cost £1200.

HOWEVER:

That was 2008 when petrol was 1 Euro 20.

ALSO:

I got really really REALLY drunk regularly

I used the gas as an on off switch and got to the South of Spain in just over 3 days.

I ate out a lot.

I also camped for half my trip, camping costs more in Portugal than Spain.

It about 4500km, so I reckon £2K would do it comfortably, unless you go mad bad style like me, illegal camping, self cooked food which I reckon petrol + £5 per day.

That's pretty pricey. How much was the ferry? Assuming that is cheaper than the Chunnel then riding there?

Tenting and cheap b&b should keep costs down Question

I reckon £30-£40 a day would be a ball park figure as an average Thinking

Swings and round abouts tbh, what you pay for the ferry you save on bike wear and fatigue. From Dunkirk its a good 500 miles to the border, add in peage (tolls have I ever told you about the trick to not pay it?) and you're looking at saving about £40 over taking the ferry.

I'm plotting right now for a Dover/Calais then a run south to the N85, then maybe go Italy,Austria and around, or along the south coast of France which is pleasant.

Read up my 2008 tour post in my sig.

Unless you love Spanish culture and people and really want to get stuck into the cities and towns, bike wise it's a bit of a waste. The best roads are almost entirely in the Spanish Pyrenees, with a very notable exception of the GI-682 Tossa de Mar - Sant Feliu along the coast - but still just outside Barcelona.

Other people like other things, of course.

You're not wrong about that, re-reading my 2008 thread Southern Spain was hot, arid and barren in many places.

Some interesting vistas and people though.

As barrkel says, you have missed the best part by not going through the mountains.

3 of us here did pretty much half that trip, got to Andorra and headed back up through Zaragoza and it took ~7 days. Could have smashed it in 2 days but the roads were too good to blast through.

Just bouncing ideas around at the moment. I have three weeks to do the trip in but would do it in less if needed.

I like the idea of following the coastline with the chance of a cooling dip every day should the need/chance arrive.

F1 cheap hotel type chains should provide the chance for people to save some cash by sharing.

I'm not sure there are any F1 type hotels in Spain, certainly not a chain.

Back then it was a case of looking around at the end of the day. It was easy camping but then lost tent..

Coastline roads in Portugal are often dual carriageways with the worst drivers and accident rates in Europe. Worth big research beforehand.

Just back from riding in the Pyrenees and the Spanish side takes some beating. If you have a requirement for superb roads then that's where you'll find them. Wink

What time of year are you planning to go??

It's hot Damn hot in the south in July, I'm currently in Mojacar in Andalusia and its 34'c atm, it was in the high 20's by 10am this morning Shocked
Due to the expected heat tomorrow's ride to Granada is having to be replanned as the route I was going to take was the A348 that follows the southern side of the Seirre Nevada. But that route would take around 6hrs to ride the 160 miles leaving me with the possibility of riding for hours in high heat. Whereas I can blast down the A92 in 2.5hrs.
The OP might want to rejig the route down the east coast, and come inland from Tortosa, avoiding the busy coastal roads & pick up the A226 going over the hills to Teruel, then south down the N330 (the roads are quieter, but good riding) past Utiel, down towards Almansa. Before swinging west at Murcia. This will give the option picking up the A7 or following the coast road. The above route I rode a few days ago

Grandchildren ................. I have no kids that the CSA know of Very Happy

anyhow back to the OP.
Unless the OP has a reason to follow the Portuguese coast I`d suggest heading north through the centre of Portugal following this route north https://www.google.com/maps?saddr=Santander,+Spain&daddr=43.171828,-4.2931836+to:42.991251,-4.2432001+to:42.9474965,-4.4909588+to:43.2580664,-4.4831069+to:42.9706359,-4.9843761+to:43.2345531,-5.5269621+to:43.1468111,-6.2169897+to:42.6686701,-6.6557499+to:41.8513841,-7.0157457+to:41.748221,-7.4282447+to:41.647937,-7.3208753+to:41.4785107,-7.6063611+to:41.208854,-7.419036+to:41.1773952,-7.3632478+to:40.8085034,-7.5585994+to:40.5840021,-7.751543+to:40.3979316,-7.4206028+to:40.2879638,-7.7550841+to:40.040253,-8.19531+to:39.7382586,-8.1350579+to:38.894424,-8.1751829+to:38.036569,-8.1118556+to:37.2854433,-7.9409188+to:Av.+Calouste+Gulbenkian%2FN125&hl=en&sll=37.350509,-8.114777&sspn=0.967226,1.560059&geocode=FaIulwIdRN3F_ylx7muKrklJDTGWuoIWgNx80g%3BFdbFkgIdQm--_yld4mHeCgRJDTELJUDPMIcGUA%3BFRUPkAIdoz6__ymh7fdeN_tIDTF-9ZQ5OidrQQ%3BFWZGjwIdiXm7_ymN656DsFBIDTGqnWkHaIUPrQ%3BFfwIlAIdZqW7_ymF7pQJ4qVJDTErPV3CoX0asQ%3BFSOvjwIdGCW0_ynT-xZCti5IDTE0nl1MRiJjzQ%3BFZK2kwIdLK6r_yldwRz2_UQ2DTFzmjzgQj6Pww%3BFaxPkgId9DOh_ymt773pwdo2DTFup_asZWDDXw%3BFV8WiwIdYHGa_ylxhF40qLgwDTEP0jH1wPx7vg%3BFUmffgId0uyU_ymjjaryT1c6DTHuUaoQLV75MQ%3BFa0KfQIdCayO_ynF0UOquuA6DTGwoRBrQUy1ag%3BFUiCewIdlkqQ_ymXY6Ptsh07DTEaox_D0pAkOA%3BFbLyeAIdHOKL_ymp4-MQnTo7DTHpULVKBooNKg%3BFdbGdAIdaNSO_yn1c6FbC2g7DTHIcjLkOUDOQw%3BFfZbdAIdka-P_ykpxPO3cWY7DTF_52mckuoYvw%3BFd2wbgIdHK6M_yl9AzqZyLs8DTGZHKwWQW0j3w%3BFcdDawId6raJ_ym7TV06-8w8DTEJB75ynHbmaw%3BFVBmaAIdUr6O_ylzwwD4HeA8DTHwsp7IkwZm6Q%3BFVquZgId8a-J_ymBtrkVkCw9DTG0vC0c2ViPtQ%3BFaQCYwIdvd6C_ynfmn-_FOsiDTFkWcKnADq0dw%3BFZNbXgIdbt6D_w%3BFVh7UQIdsUGD_w%3BFVlkRAIdEDmE_w%3BFUPuOAIdydSG_w%3BFTD3NAId4ueG_ykFG8m9yVIFDTF9eG46VEHT8g&t=m&z=12.

We went mid July... he is correct, it is roasting.

Engine oil temp was ~30 degrees before we even woke up.

In the heat try not ride in the afternoon in southern Spain.
This morning I left Mojacar before the sun was up, even then it was in the low 20's. a quick 2.5hr blast up the A92 and over 1000m up over the sierre and its was a pleasantly cool ride and I'm now in Granada and now its currently 32'c. The heat of southern Spain is another reason to consider leaving the camping gear at home and use various forms of accommodation. I've only needed the evap vest once so far, but running through Seville in the next few day I'm expecting it to hit 44'c+

I went start of July it got up to 50 near Seville, riding faster did not work as more hot air hit you making you even hotter.

I ignored it, hence pictures of me at the South of Spain looking p o'd
