TL:DR picking up a bike with no tax, intend to tax it online when I get there seller has said OK...

Its a Sunday tomorrow meaning post offices are closed.

How long does it take to update on the database so I don't get stopped for no tax on ANPR? since I won't have the tax disc and I'm not sure if I will have the print out stating its been taxed online.

Just ask the seller to print the email that you get from the DVLA when you buy the tax. Use that if you get stopped

Ahhh this is turning into a mess, as the MID database isn't updated yet either which means I can't get tax either.

Buy both on day, police can CALL the insurers, if that checks out they will probably believe you about tax and give you a producer or some crap

I can't buy tax without insurance.

I have insurance in place, but the MID database isn't updated yet (I have the cover note in my hand), which means I can't tax online, as online tax relies on the MID.

I can't buy it in person because on Sundays post offices are closed.

Ahhh what a mess this is becoming.

A local van place (2 streets away) is closed on Sundays.

The other 3 private van hire places are closed on Sundays

The big car hire places only do vans at Manchester airport meaning I have to go 20 miles in the opposite direction.

Based on what happened to a workmate over an SP50:

The blackmail letter will go to the current keeper. They'll say "sold it that day, innit". Old and new keepers can both adduce a defence that "other bloke done it", and the prosecution evaporates.

Its not an SP50 though, its a case of I can get everything in place other than road tax. As I can't tax it online due to it not being on the MID.

Nor can I go to a post office because of 2 reasons its Sunday and the nearest PO which does road tax is 12 miles away.

I taxed a bike this morning on-line, and I'm sure they said you have 15days after the tax runs out, to get it sorned or re-taxed, and to allow you to take the bike for a booked MOT appointment etc.

Also as i understand it, if you SORN now it's for life with no annual renewal required, which is how it should have always been!

TBH, tax is the one I worry about least, so long as insurance and MOT are in place.

My last three or four bikes and cars have been driven/ridden back from far flung places, with no valid tax disc (I don't display a tax disc on any of my bikes anyway).

You wouldn't be able to tax it online in any case, because it's not registered to you, unless you did a deal with the present owner to post it on to you, in which case you will be well past the grace period.

I considered this but since the bike is located on a popular biking route with ANPR cameras and I have to go onto the M60 which also has ANPR cameras, I think I'll get a tug for no tax.

It has MOT though.

Which is what I intended to do have him post it to me.

Looks like a courier company is in order got a quote the other day for £75...

I live in London, which is popular for ANPR full stop, last bike was ridden back from Coventry down the M6/M1, Corvette ("please stop me" signs as standard) driven back from Portsmouth on the A3.

Not been nicked yet.

I would if it showed up on the MID, I have an insurance cert, but a tug for no insurance oh you've no tax etc occurring.

Think I'll hire a van on Monday to pick it up.

If you can wait until Monday, get your insurance company to email you a certificate with the registration number on it, go pick up the bike and head straight for the nearest post office.

Hire fee saved, everybody happy Thumbs Up

Hmmm that has made me think of a potential issue...

What happens when they get rid of the ability to sell a vehicle with tax? When you go to buy the vehicle you won't be able to tax online straight away as the insurance database won't be updated instantly, meaning you're stuck with an untaxed bike and will be unable to legally ride away.

I remember when I bought a bike with no tax, it was a massive pain in The arse. Rang and insured it, was told papers would be emailed instantly, 5 minutes went past, then 10, then 20. Rang them back and was told again they would send them through right away, she even said she'd sent them whilst I was on the phone.

To my surprise I actually had an email, containing the insurance papers of someone else who shared my last name! After ringing back again, it had gone past 5pm and the post office had shut.

To conclude: they should keep tax discs and allow vehicles to be sold with to, whenever I look for a vehicle to buy, I always look for one with tax rather than without.

I've got a plan, Monday phone an MOT place for an MOT on Tuesday afternoon.

Pick bike up sans tax on Tuesday morning, ride to the nearest Post office, which just so happens to be on the way.

Buy tax, ride home, cancel the MOT.

I think I have all the bases covered using this plan.

Hopefully by Tuesday they will have updated the MID too, but if they haven't I'll have the cert printed out or delivered.

Meh what a convoluted load of balls.

Only because you're making it that way.

I've already told you how you can have an insurance certificate in your hand, you will have a valid MOT when you pick the bike up, you ride to the nearest post office and tax the bike, which will be valid from 1/7/2014.

By the time the paperwork comes through, if you're unlucky enough to get snapped, the worst that can happen is being done for failing to display, which will most likely get laughed out of court.

And while we're in overthinking mode, let's play through the scenarios:

If you only get caught on camera, during your 15 minute ride to the post office, it has no way of knowing if you're displaying or not, plus it will be the registered keeper that gets nicked, which isn't you; he denies all knowledge, drops you in it, then you produce all your valid bits of paper, case closed.

If you get stopped by the cops, you produce your receipt, new keeper supplement, MOT and insurance, tell the plod which post office you're heading to and he sends you on your way, assuming you haven't actually been stopped for trying to break the LSR, past a primary school at chucking out time.

The third (and most likely) scenario is bugger all happens, you get the bike, tax it at the post office and have a nice day.

Just get on with it, no matter what the tin foil hat wearers and the Daily Fail tell you, Big Brother hasn't arrived yet.
