Hi,

I really have difficulty at times opening (unlocking) fuel tank cap, as key will not move and I dread if it breaks I will be stranded at fuel station sometimes miles away from my place; I was wondering is it ok to use WD40 on it? will it not contaminate fuel if WD40 ingresses inside the fuel tank through the lock?

I also sometimes have problem with ignition lock; can I use WD40 on it? will any electrical contacts inside it will be effected?

Kindly advice

WD40 will be OK, but something like 3-1 will be better at actually lubricating the locks.

Try pressing down on the petrol cap as you try and turn the key. This should take some pressure off the lock mechanism and make it easier to open.

The WD in WD40 is "Water Dispersal". So use where you want to get rid of water. So ideal in locks.

I've used penetrating oil and even a little grease in bike locks before.

Fuel lock should be ok. Should any WD40 get to fuel it'll be very very small amount as being oil based will just burn with the petrol anyhow.

Don't over think stuff.

People mistakenly use WD40 as a fix all lubricant, as above; it's not a lubricant. Get some 3 in 1 or even something like spray on chain lube will do the trick.

I agree. Spraying WD40 on bike can be counter productive as it creates a sticky film. This then attracts crud to, err, for want of a better description, stick. Although there's some who regard this crud as a protective layer.

Never use WD40 on any locks, use graphite powder only!

Locks gum and seize because they fill up with road film. 3in1 and graphite won't wash this junk out of the mechanism but wd40 or other similar degreasers/dispersants will flush the lock through nicely if you use a straw and they'll expel any water too. Give it a go and watch all the gunge come out, when it comes out clean you can lube the lock with your favourite gloop. I flush the lock out, blast it with my air line then lube it with normal engine oil also blasted through with the air line.

This. You can buy it on eBay or Amazon. Locksmiths sell it too. Thumbs Up

For a quick fix rub a soft pencil on your key and work the lock - repeat a few times.

Best advice ever. You may not benefit from it but someone down the line of ownership certainly will

If they are sticking try blasting the crap out with carb cleaner/ brake cleaner / contact cleaner, same shizzle really,
Then a few drops of what ever you use on the chain will do.

I am fast becoming a convert to using ACF50 in locks and electrical contacts.

Fully agree with flushing out with brake/carb cleaner ( cause it will evaporate off ) WD40 would leave a residue that would need to be driven off using high pressure air.

Dip your oil. Touch your dipstick to your key. Work the key in the lock.
A cheap penetrating lube can be made up with petrol & two stroke oil in a garden spray bottle. Diesel is another great lube/cleaner/protector, brush it on, wash it off & it ain't as combustible as most solvents. Why people pay £5 per litre for spray lube is beyond me but then I'm the tight arse who uses used engine oil for chain lube...
