I was just looking for my first helmet and earlier on I found a few helmets that I tried on had visors which were tricky to open when fully shut. Is that a normal thing or is it a sign of a crappy helmet? Thanks.

You want a visor to be on the firmer side to open. My Shark helmet visor went really loose and would blow open when doing lifesavers at speed.

As said above. It is supposed to be stiff and clicky. You'll get used to it.

Some visors have a locking mechanism on them (usually a switch to one side). Make sure that this hasn't been engaged before you try and open it.

mine too. I have to try and adjust it
before I use it next time.
The wife's HJC RPHA lid has a much better visor mechanism.

Bit of a theme here - mine (Speed-R) goes too loose to stay up in slow traffic, but haven't had an issue with it coming open unexpectedly. It did come with an allen key for tightening it up, a bit of a tweak every few weeks whilst cleaning it sorts it out. The other issue with mine is that it has a clip to keep it closed (basically a ridge on the visor that goes over a rivet sticking out of the side of the helmet). I found it just about impossible to open the visor with gloves on, and after riding around without it properly sealed for ages (as I didn't want to risk not being able to open it) I sanded down that ridge a little so it still holds it securely shut but I can actually open it.

Oh yes, This 100% I thought it was just mine, what plank designed that???
Mine is a Speed R and I also can't open it easily when clicked down.
I've got the knack now in my summer gloves which are quite thin, but
sod all chance in my thicker waterproof gloves. The little lip needs to be
a tiny bit longer. Whoever okayed that when this helmet was designed
deserves a slap. Rubbish design, I am searching for a solution of my
own.
The helmet I bought for my wife has a much better design (HJC RPHA)
and clip mechanism. For starters it is a central clasp that clicks down
firmly. But just brush the large clasp upwards with either hand and its open.

Very instinctive mechanism which is good. You don't want fiddly and
the Shark helmet is certainly that unlike the HJC where the clasp
closes with a firm click and you know it won't get snatched by the wind
if you turn your head which has happened to me doing fast lifesavers when I
thought I'd clicked it down on the Speed R. The speed r's visor ruins an
otherwise very decent crash helmet. And I still have to tighten up the
visor on mine and de-bug it again, may have a crack at that tonight.
I'm afraid it's a big fat fail for the clasp on the Speed R. A total faff!!
Oh and left hand use only, which is dumb!! Particularly when most
folk are right handed anyway. But in the centre makes a lot more sense.https://www.fc-moto.de/WebRoot/FCMotoDB/Shops/10207048/5243/E939/DF53/4670/CA1A/3E70/5055/AACE/HJC-RPHA_ST_PEARL_WHITE_RYAN_3.jpg

Had my first experience of that exact same thing happening with my Shark the other week on the motorway. Not nice.
