PostPosted: 00:26 - 14 Jan 2005    Post subject: Kawasaki ER-5 (500cc) VS Hyosung Comet 650cc Reply with quote

Hi all, I'm trying to decide between:

Kawasaki ER-5
and
Hyosung Comet GT 650

In my opinion, the Hyosung seems more techonologically advanced in the sense that it has for instance:

a V-TWIN engine on the Hyosung as opposed to the 2-cylinder in line Kawasaki Engine

front (double) and rear disk brakes on the Hyosung whilst single disk on the front and drum on the back with the Kawasaki

approximately 79 BHP on the 650cc Hyosung whilst only 49 BHP on the 500cc Kawasaki

Aesthetically I also prefer the Hyosung, but I'm afraid of after sales service, depreciation, reliability, lifetime and other similar things, considering that Kawasaki is a known brand name whilst hardly anybody has heard of Hyosung.

Can you all give me your opinions about this please as I have found myself between two shores and I don't know which one to choose!

If it makes any difference, I live in Malta, where sea spray and corrosion play quite a role in corroding objects, especially those made of metal! So that's another issue as to which bike is more resistant to corrosion.

I would appreciate any of you haveing seen, ridden, tested and analysed these bikes to give me your opinion.

Thanks.

In my personal opinion. ER-5. Can't go wrong. Thumbs Up
With the Hyosung there is alot more that mechanics don't know about, also the Kwak is alot more common for parts & servicing etc..

I'd be supprised if you hadn't considered the sv650 nekid version, slightly better build quality and very slightly less powerfull but widely regarded as a solid motor...

The er5 has had its share of reliability issues, though generally its reliable theres a few lemons about...

I'd take the hyosung gt650 if I had the money and more money to fall back on should things go wrong. Hyosung haven't really proven themselves in the "big boy" bikes market yet, so i'd be hesitant, although they've pummelled shitloads into R&D for the comet series.

Reliability, decent looks, lots of spare parts that are dirt cheap, cheap servicing, can't go wrong with an er5 Smile

I read a review a couple of months back in bike i believe comparing the hyosung comet to the sv, and although it was cheaper than the sv they reckoned it still wasnt as a good a bike per pound that the sv is.

The main things were its finish werent up to the SV's and that although from a distance it looks solid enough up close tthere were ment to be a few flaws to it. They also commented that like its smaller brother it tended to weave slightly due to the suspension not be quite right. On the plus side it still held its own and the engine is pretty good, though i dont think its anything thing like 79bhp. closer 69 like the SV.
I have an 02 SV650s and i cant say i have had any problems with it what so ever and the finish is still excellent other than a bit on the forks.

The ER-5 is ment to be a good solid bike, used by many a school, but is ment to be very bland all round!

Other than an SV i would seriously recommend a cb500 they are excellent bikes and a lot more entertaining than the ER-5.

Have fun what ever you go with though! Very Happy

Any idea what the reliability issues are? I mean are they small knitty gritties or things that play an important role and cost lots of money and so on...

You're right. I've seen the Comet 250 (as the 650 will be here in a couple of weeks) and the welding seems pretty crude and untidy!

However, about the ER-5 I've also heard that it may slide off when cornering, especially if you're a light weight (which, mind you, I'm not).

However, all these replies are quite convincing me on looking at the SV. The only problem is that the Kawasaki and Hyosung dealers are offering a part exchange for my present bike (a small Kawasaki Kaze 112cc) whilst I doubt if the SV dealer will offer me anything for it...

I'd check out the second hand market for Hyosungs and see what the prices are like, cos I wouldn't be surprised if they depreciate faster than the 'name' bikes.

Whether you care about depreciation or not, is another matter. Smile

What do you mean slide off when cornering, takksi?

I own an er5 and it behaves very well in the corners despite my light frame...

I'd say if you've got the money, go for a second hand sv.

Hi instigator, what I managed to gather from a couple of posts on different forums is that it goes round corners very quickly, and thus one may make the mistake of turning too quickly and losing balance or something of the sort.

Mind you, I'm only asking about what I've read - I would be in a greater position to tell you what it is exactly once I could have the chance to ride one. But then, again, I'm not the type to drive at a very high speed, so I wouldn't be pushing the bike to the limit.

Besides that, another comment I read somewhere was that the original tyres that come with the bike are not so good and may be somewhat slippery. Is it true?

How long have you had your er-5 for? Have you had any problems with the electrics of the bike?

I don't know if we're allowed to post links to other forums, if so I'll paste the links to where I've read these things.

The ER5 is a very competent and reliable allrounder, I've ridden my Sons and I'm very tempted to get one to replace my CBR1000, I just LOVE riding it.

If anyone wants a stock tip, put some on Hyosung. They'll be bigger in the future. They are as good as the big 4 on build quality and are getting bigger.

If i had some cash and 10 years to forget about it, i'd do that at least.

But I know sod all about the stock market - I just like Hyosung

Oh, and you could probably take the GT650 to a Suzuki garage and the mechanics would be pretty familiar with it...it's made by ex-suzuki engineers based on the sv650 engine. Wouldn't mind one myself.

Takksi - No problems with the electrics on my bike at all, the regulator is the only known part to fail at a regular interval (initially, at 15,000-18,000 miles).

You can of course just adjust the preload on the bike so that it will turn quicker and slower. I'm quite light so it's up to the highest setting at the moment, but before, it turned quite slowly.

Hello Smile

Excuse me again, but what is the "preload"? Sorry for all my questions but I'm far from an expert on bikes. I have only acquired expertise on computers throughout my career Embarassed and am not so much of a motor/technical person.

Everyone I have been speaking to has advised me against the Hyosung, for various reasons. The three main reasons were:

1) As soon as they arrive to the dealer they are apparently passed on to a mechanic to tune them, set them and arrange any faults before presenting them for sale

2) The engine isn't designed too well, in the sense that the rear cylinder (the Hyosung engine is a V-Twin) heats up due to inefficient cooling

3) Body work and paint isn't good at all, they rust and there are parts of them which even lack the undercoat.

(I'm quoting what various friends/amateurs/mechanics have been telling me and relaying what they told me to you - so please don't take this as my personal opinion or get offended in any way, espcially Hyosung owners).

This evening I went to have a look at the ER-5 again, and it seemed nicer that it looked when I first saw it Very Happy

It comes with a 2-year warranty on the whole motorcycle and apparently EURO II standards.

What I have noticed is that the "pipes" coming out of the cylinder head to the silencer, i.e. basically the manifold and the pipes running underneath the engine are black, whilst others have silver/gold silencer pipes. Does anybody know whay is this so? I mean are there different types or different standards?

Another thing is that the main speedometer markings are in MPH - is there any option to get in KMH?

Takksi - The er5 comes standard with black painted pipes, any different pipes such as stainless steel (the shiny surface you mentioned) will be an after market piece. And these are quite expensive for the er5, ranging from £300-400 for a full system (exhaust and pipes)

When I mean adjust the preload, I mean adjust the rear shocks at the back of the bike. The more you tighten the shocks, the quicker the bike will turn. To be honest, I don't have much to compare to with my er5, as I've only had a 125 cruiser before, but I find that it handles corners very well and have had no problems with it. See picture.

Regarding the kmh/mph issue, you can manually stick on stickers to tell you what speed you're doing in kmh. To be honest, it takes no time at all to adjust to mph. My first bike, a 125, had kmh on the clocks and I just remembered what 30, 40, 50 and 60km/h were in mph. Simple really, just multiply the kmh by 1.6 and you're done. It stuck in my mind ever since, and still know the exact figures from the top of my ehad. It will take no time to adjust, trust me Smile

Edit; What he meant by blan all round is that the engine can feel like it doesn't have much character to it - not very distinguishable and you may find you get bored with it. However, dont let that put you off, take the er5 over the hyosung Thumbs Up

wooooh instigator your bike looks really cool. the colour is slightly different to the one I've seen though!

Is the fairing at the front a custom add-on, because it makes a whole lot of a difference!

I was adivsed to get engine guards, but besides those I'd like to get the front fairing too as it looks fabulous on your bike!

Do you have other pictures of your bike? I'd like to see them. If you want send me a message and I'll give you my email address.

The silver on the one I've seen is like the one on the following link:
