got myself some spare rear shocks for my CG.
the coils have paint peeling and some surface rust (rest of shock is in OK state and functions/rebounds and compresses well).
would like to get them apart and give the coils a good cleaning up/repainting.
has anyone got one of these apart?
looking at this tool to help with coil removal:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360625592992?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

anyone used something like this?
will it explode in my face?
not fussed about the fact that it costs as much as a 2nd hand pair of shocks (which will most likely be in a similar condition anyway).....

they look like they'd do the job - no info on the width of those hooked parts - do these things come size specific (i.e/ for cars and motorbikes) as i'd imagine the tool size would vary due to coil size...???

I'm sorry (well, I'm not), but what?

What bikes and cars are you looking at?

A little 125 rear shock spring, running twinshocks, will have an external daimeter of something in the order of 50mm, with a wire diameter of around 6-8mm. My 750 with a mono really isn't a whole lot bigger either.

Conversely, a 'normal' front wheel drive road car (let's say a 106) with macpherson struts up front has an external spring diameter around 120mm or so and a wire diameter of more like 10mm...

In addition to that, car springs usually have a much more relaxed wind than a bike shock spring, meaning a shitload more space between each winding - not unusual to be something like 40mm compared to 10mm on a bike.

I have 3 different car spring compressors here right now, and not one of them will fit and work on tha vast majority of bike springs. Both types linked will be a cunt to use, especially the second one...

The second type of spring compressor linked is designed to be used on car springs. It has double hooks on each jaw. You won't be able to get both hooks onto a bike spring because of the curvature of the spring, so it'll be just the one.

So it'll twist and the leadscrew will try to bind, which will try and pull the hook off the spring.

Then, because you have had to grind 80% of the hook off to get it in between the tiny coils on a bike shock in the first place (plus the fact small bike springs are relatively weak anyway) the twisting will need to do much less work to go ping and fire the compressor (hopefully) over your shoulder.....

But hey, what the very fuck do I know about it? I haven't made enough posts to know anything. Best of luck.

That cobbled together one in the picture will be far superior to fucking around with a car spring compressor btw.

A lot of the cheaper ones have cast rather than forged or machined hooks, poorly cast at that. I wouldn't cut or bend one of those myself (well, not again at least........)
