Had mot on friday and garage said my front brake was spongy and should have failed but as it worked, it passed. Said that there was water in the fluid so will need to be drained and changed. Offered to do it for £40

Being tight i wouldnt mind doing it myself if i can but cant find any instructions on the net. Even the handbook says take it to a dealer. Is it easy enough for a novice or should i let them do it?

there are zillions of videos about changing brake fluid

You need DOT 4 fluid https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/brake-clutch-fluid/halfords-dot4-universal-brake-clutch-fluid-250ml

Having said that careful with brake fluid its dangerous and corrosive - protect the paint your hands and probably eyes!

on your place I would have flushing well the old fluid with new one - means putting new fluid and flushing it out until you are completely sure there is no old left - by seeing new good fluid going out at the bottom.

I found "simple" jobs like this a complete ballache. Hours spent watching Youtube clips, reading Haynes manuals and titting about in the garage swearing at my stupidity.

But, once done a couple of times, it is straightforward and can be quick and save some money. Plus you know its actually been done!

I would recommend the reverse bleed method, so you use a synringe + plastic pipe attached to the bleed valve to push new fluid into the system.
It saves getting RSI not having to pump the brake lever hundreds of times.
