Depends what sort of sound quality you want. You can get those Marshall mini-amps which run off a 9v battery and can clip onto your guitar strap, they have a headphone outlet but the sound quality is diabolical. I'd certainly go with a larger Amp and wireless headphones, or if you can't afford wireless headphones then just get a headphone extender lead (2 or 3 quid).

What's your budget and what's it going to be used for? I only ask because it's pointless spending out for something that sounds rubbish just because it's small.

Get and cheap multi-effect, most of them have stereo jack out for headphones. Thumbs Up

But, I'd just get an small 10w transistor combo, 99.9% of them also have emulated headphones out and you can jam with your mates when you get good enough.

EDIT: Do not bother with wireless, you do not need that. Thumbs Up

An small decent transistor amp is about 45-60 pounds. Don't go for the toy like crap, marshall did their 1w plastic stack, not good I must say.

By the way, the cheapest thing with 3.5 jack out I could find - Digitech RP70, 42pounds.

There's also VOX headphones amp, but I would not go for that.

I don't want any wires or having to boot up a computer. I already have proper amps and have a stealthlead to hook up through a pc but I just want to pick up my ax slap on some headphones and play.

I use a FiiO G01 like this
https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41KPob%2BrbeL._SX425_.jpg
FiiO are known for making good headphone amps for portable audio, you'll find general discussions on headphone-geek websites (yes, they exist!).

This particular device plugs directly into your guitar, and can also take an auxiliary input so you can play along to a backing track. I also use mine for practice in the living room, feeding the headphone output to an input on the AV amp and using the aux input to mix in stuff from my computer.

The quality is OK, I find the overdrive control a bit sharp between not enough and too much. I also tend to not have it plugged directly into my bass, but use a female-to-female adaptor to let me use a short cable on it with the amp tucked into a loop on my strap, which I find far more comfortable (less risk of knocking it against something and causing damage).

*I also use GhostRider

Any good cheap, modernish multi-effect with amplifier modelling and some basic extra stuff (delay/modulation like phaser etc) will be acceptable. Match this with decent quality headphones, ideally DJ type ones which have got good isolation from outside sound (and crucially isolate everyone else from what you're hearing, in some cases) and increased bass response.

Nothing, and I do mean nothing, will compare to the sound of a properly setup valve amp with the tubes cooking at volume, but if you gotta practice digital modelling is a good make-do.

Oh shit, that reminds me, I need to go and play music at someone's wedding reception. Excuse me.

I looked at some youtube reviews of the Orange Crush and the FiiO G01. I'm going to get the FiiO. It looks the best and a good price. I'm also thinking of getting a FiiO headphone amp to run my iPod through as well now as one of the reasons I don't use my iPod is the sounds crap.

Just as an addition to this, I have an iRig. I got it for about 9 quid, and it means i can connect my guitar to my iPad. I already have garageband (£3) but there is other software that you can get that means you can record music as well as jam. there are also other effects.
