That did leave me with a very big grin, and I'm not normally particularly keen on the 2 stroke sound. Very Happy

It's not a vid. that I made myself.
It's not even my bike (I wish it was Wink )
The link was given to me by a friend.

I do have actually a verry similar video of my own RD500.
It's a shame that it is about 80 mb so I can't post is here on this forum.
On the other hand the resolution of my vid. is almost DVD quality...
If anybody got space to hoast it please send me an PM Razz

It looks like he wasn't riding it at anywhere near the speed it could have been.

Not getting past a duke on a bike of that claimed spec is a bit poor for a video really.

The spec isnt that impressive?? Times have changed, We're not working on the 2t having almost twice the power over a 4t anymore.

562cc 'racetuned' and it produced 127BHP. Yes a 4 stroke doesnt do that but it isnt 'that' far behind. Actually saying that, I'd expect a highly tuned 600 to get close to that...

Only thing it has on it's side over a standard 750+ 4t is the weight. He doesnt say how much it weighs, I'd assume it's more than a standard RS250 (Which is???)

Back in the day the 2 stroke would have weighed a lot less than a for stroke. Now days the 4 strokes are catching up.
The RS250 weighs 141kg's.
Lets say the RS500 weighs 166kg (rg500's weight), and makes 127hp.
That gives the RS500 a power to weight ratio of 0.765 hp/kg.
Now lets take an 2002 R6 for example. Weighs 170kg and makes 120 hp. Giving it a power to weight ratio of 0.705 hp/kg.
I would still take the RS over the R6 just for the smell. Very Happy

Thats 127bhp at the rear wheel on a dyno. I've known people to get more than that out of the standard 500cc. A Modern 600 produces about 105bhp at the rear wheel. The RG500 engine is 15 years old now. I'm sure that there are no 15 year old 4T bikes which can compaire to a modern 4T.

Truth is that very little development has gone into 2 strokes over recent years, yet four stroke investment has gone up alot.

A truely modern 500 2 stroke would leave modern 4 stroke bikes for dead. unfortunatly, there is no such thing Crying or Very sad

I'll be its still a lovely thing to ride (Powerband! Shocked ) and would no doubt be able to use its short wheel base and light weight to great effect around a track. On the public roads however what matters is sheer Oompf as and when needed, and 2 strokes are notoriusly peaky.

Four strokes are better bikes, and 2 strokes will gradually die out. But given the choice, if money was no object, i'd have the biggest 2 stroke i could! Very Happy

I'm not disputing the fact that 2strokes havent been touched for a very long time, But before that it was 2strokes that got all the attention and 4strokes that were left for meny meny years.

But alot of people still think that 4strokes are big old heavy lumps which produce little power, Which was the case maybe 15 years ago. Not anymore.

I'm no enginner, But if they were still producing road 2 strokes how much more power do you think they can pull from them while keeping some sort of relaibility? I'm not sure how far you can push such a basic engine without killing the already unrelaible relaibility

Edit: Sorry about the rambling there, Just got up Smile Well basically what I'm trying to say is that it's not 'that' impressive, It would be if I couldnt nip down the road and buy a GSXR1000/R1/Fireblade which weighs about 175kg and makes a good 150BHP at the wheels.

Mark Dent gets 145bhp at the rear wheel out of a 570cc RG motor, and his bike still using the RG500 chassis is said to weigh around 135kg. that's such a loads better power to weight ratio than any 4stroke Nasp bike out there!
Also this should mean at least 160bhp at the crank, so its really really close to a GP500 bike!

he claims the weight of that rs at 130kg also
a 01 r1 stock has about 128bhp at the wheel and about 67lb/ft of torque
that has 127 and 70, and weighs lots less and it delivers it within a tiny powerband,
it wudnt be a comparable experience
also
another thing is road going 2 strokes tend to rev quite low to keep reliability up, rgv redlines at 11,500 and it makes about 58bhp at the wheel
a 400 revs to 15000 to produce the same type of power, a cbr250 revs to 18500 to get 40bhp, a 2 stroke 250 revvin to 18500, well u cud expect a whole shit load more than 40bhp Smile

Meh wasnt impressed with his riding, or his bike that much. Almost seemed like stock rs 250 performance.

Cant believe how little risk taking he would do, even for a video.

And not a single wheelie Crying or Very sad
