I'm looking to upgrade, just bought card + PSU from Ste, so I'm really behind on the Mobo/CPU/RAM front, need a case also.

Currently Q9400, 4GB RAM and a POS mobo that "just works"

Looking for 8-16GB RAM, Middle weight processor for light ish gaming duties, think Black Ops, Far Cry... etc.

Looking for fairly cheap but fairly reliable. Have a Radeon R9 270 and an 850W modular PSU which is remarkable quiet.. so anything that will fit those happily.

Any Intel Core i5 with HD 4600 would be enough. The MB does not matter really and if you won't be using the APU functionality, then it does not even matter how fast (plus CL) the RAM is.

i5 3570k which comes stock as quad core 3.4ghx but you can OC to 4ghz in 2 minutes no issues. I recommend the EVO 212 coolermaster as a great heatsink.

Get a solid mobo with good reviews. Asus make good quality boards. Don't go for the cheapest ones.

RAM, DDR3 and get some medium to high speed. Cheap nowadays.

SSD is a must if you haven't already thought of that. Look on hotukdeals for 512gb SSD's for ~£150.

'Tis what I have, along with an Asus Z87-A and a GTX670. Absolutely destroys everything at 1080p.

Jesus, I should hope it does! I play everything at 2560x1600 and get around 45fps average in my flight-sims.

I've already got an SSD, might grab another as its the best thing I've done to a machine in years Thumbs Up

Should I only aim for Intel? Seem plenty of AMD 6 core things that look attractive.. would rather only do this the once Laughing

Personal preference, based upon two decades of experience, I touch nothing but Intel.

I oc'd my AMD Quad Core 6600k to 4.5GHz, get them for around £100....
(also has intergraded graphics, just to let you know, thats the meaning of the 'A' 'APU')
Ram is no issue as it's very cheap, have 8GB as your minimum. Just ebay it, as long as its over 1600MHz its in the modern age.

Uhm,

That's it really, for your case check whether the board is a micro or full size, most cases have compatibility for both.

AMD FX-6350

Ignoring overclocking, it is equally matched with pretty much the i5 range.

No point spending £140+ on one of the quicker i5 intels, when a £100 AMD is very comparable.

If you want faster, then go for an i7 as for me the i5s don't offer much more than the FX-6350 for the extra money you pay.

Also, no real reason to have more than 8gb of ram for games at the moment.

So you wouldn't go for an i5 over an FX-6350 but you would go i7 over i5? Seems a bit reversed.

depends what the budget is ?

How will you be financing this, selling old parts and adding money on top.

Secondly buying new or second hand parts or open box ?

Because the only major difference between an i7 and an i5 is hyper threading which is no real use to most people. Even high end games don't need this.

Budget, cheap as possible as always.

Financing by selling shit I don't need anymore.

New or s/h is fine, as long as everything is there.

Cheapish build means going the amd route. Dont know if you want full blown 8 cores, most of which you will probably never use unless you are rendering videos or using heavy photoshop layering. Six cores does a decent job and is priced around 50-60 second hand. 6350.

am3+ 990 mobo with that will cost around 70 if new. There are second hand mobos selling around 50.

Ram second hand is usually priced very close to new anyway. it depends what speeds you want. But most of the pricing for 8gb will be between 50-70. 50 being the 1600 and 70 probably being the 2133 at a push.

If you buy new you have the option of getting 12 months interest free finance if you spend over 300 I think. I bought my current system this way as i wanted the components urgently as the computer had just died for no reason.

I have a 2600k, Asrock Ext4 Gen3 mobo and 8GB of Samsung Green RAM that would be perfect for a gaming rig. All items boxed, £200 if you collect/I deliver, as I get down that way on occasion. I also have a coolermaster case for another £20 Embarassed

That's a good CPU but a budget board and cheap RAM. The CPU on its own is around £200 new, the board and RAM probably another £50. I wouldn't touch it 2nd-hand for 200 notes, I'd pay the extra for all new (except I wouldn't go with a budget board and cheap RAM).

I just got a top-line CPU, board and RAM for 100 notes from a guy on BCF and that's the kind of deal you should be looking for (easier said than done, I know, but it's a fair deal imo).

What Hetzer says. Thumbs Up

You can get some good deals second hand but you've got to do some waiting and be quick when they come along. Am not of a fan of eBay cos you get people selling all sorts of shit on there, you should be able to get better prices on BCF cos the seller isn't giving 10% to eBay and however much it is to PayPal. Sick

A read up of the Samsung Green gives plenty of praise Shocked Not seen many reviews on the board as a little busy atm..

Will it really matter given the fact my highest spec based game is like... world of tanks and black ops. Laughing

Very much this.

If you are planning on using VM's, number crunching and using CPU intensive productivity software then head down the i7 path.
If not, grab an i5
