If you're helmet meets the ECE regulation 22.05, does it need to have the sticker or have it sewn into the lining to be legal for road use in UK?

I currently live in Australia but I am moving to UK at the end of the year, and I want to buy a new Bell Bullitt helmet. Ultimately I'd like to be able to wear it in both Australia and the UK.

If I buy the helmet in Australia, it has the AS 1698 sticker/lining tag (australian standard), but it does not have the ece sticker/lining tag, if I buy it in UK, vice versa, despite it being the exact same helmet.

The UK gov website says this:
"All helmets worn on UK roads must either:

meet British Standard BS 6658:1985 and carry the BSI Kitemark
meet UNECE Regulation 22.05
meet a European Economic Area member standard offering at least the same safety and protection as BS 6658:1985, and carry a mark equivalent to the BSI Kitemark"

So, if I buy the helmet here in Aus, it still meets the ECE regulation, just doesn't have the sticker to prove it. This information is a little confusing...

In Queensland, Australia, if your helmet does not have the AS1698 sticker on the outside, AND the label on the inside, it is illegal, even if the sticker wears off. (and no, it is impossible to get a replacement sticker, and they are almost impossible to remove from another helmet without them saying void). What's more, with all our new anti bikie-gang laws, cops are trying to catch out bikies with little fines and defects. They are checking and giving tickets. They make you take off the helmet and they check both the sticker and tag, and the fines are hefty and take points off your licence. So if I buy a bell bullit in UK, there is no way I can wear it legally in Australia...

No one is going to check your helmet for any markings in the UK, as long as it looks right, you'll not have any problems

Agreed. I know people that have worn fibreglass german replica helmets and never been stopped.

FFS, round my way the chavs don't bother wearing helmets and the police don't seem to do F all. Evil or Very Mad

Any helmet certified once is certified forever.

As such I have worn novelty helmets which impart no protection what so ever as long as it looks the part the cop will not want to leave his air con'd car.

As above, it'll never be checked over here.

Saw a guy riding about town on his scooter with a ski helmet on. The cops would never stop you wearing an actual helmet to check for stickers.

If you intend to race it must have an ACU sticker other that that the cops will not care about or know the road regs.

Off topic, and written like a child. Well done.

I used a Bandit 'Stig' looking helmet on a bikesafe day, was fine. Nothing mentioned about it.

Those "fuckers" are awesome, I went to see Hilltop Hoods (A popular Australian hiphop group) with a couple of friends the other day, Google says the venue holds 2,000 people, and it was rammed. I reckon it was 90% Australians.

Everybody was plastered, pretty decent mosh pit too, and I got to crowd surf, all 16.5 stone of me! They had nothing against the random English guys in the crowd. A completely amazing night with Aussies, they're welcome here any time.
