How does this work?

I need to replace a speedo drive, which means taking the front wheel off, bike only has a side stand so it needs jacking up, never done a wheels off job myself so never needed a jack, but I've decided to give it a go.

I have 2 problems, the first being I'm not really sure how jacks with a bike work, there's several types from what I can see, so any advice appreciated.

The second being I'm a cheapskate, so I don't want to pay a lot for it, can't find any cheap ones locally and don't want to drive miles to pick one up.

I've seen this cheap, but can't for the life of me work out how it works?

Car jack will do, you should have one in the back of your car or friend's car etc for changing the spare tyre, bike on side stand, undo all that needs to be loose, jack up bike near the front nice and easy keep an eye on the stand, it should stay locked forward, remove bolts, remove wheel, job jobbed.

i have never seen or used a lift/stand of this type, which brings me to the question, why not just buy a standard lift?

those are what i use & found them to be well worth the price i paid for them a few years ago & are easily adapted to take bobbins & more importantly, are easily used when your on your own,

This is why I was asking, I've literally never had to lift a bike up before, so hadn't ever given it any thought as to how they work. With paddock stands, do they just cup under the forks? If so how stable is that? And how adjustable are they? As the bottom of the forks sits higher/lower, wider/narrower on different bikes.

As TUG said but be careful you place the jack securely or this may happen

Don't you only have a 125? You should be fine jacking it up on the exhaust, then remove the wheel. I'm guessing it's a cruiser from the stand you linked too so will be close to the floor, in which case a jack from the back of a car's boot should be more than perfect.

Yeah in this case its for a honda cm125, so quite low & light, would be nice if I can get one that'd also fit the kwak gt550 too, but that's not a priority at the minute, so if I can use a standard scissor jack out the boot of the car then that seems like the best solution for right now.

The one linked was just one I found and wondered how it worked really, I still cant see how it works, but after comments here & a little more research I think car jack for this job, and plan to invest in a pair of paddock stands for future use

I just use a tree branch in my back yard & lynch the front end. Ratchet belt is best but a length of rope or a sling will do.

That was my plan originally, tried hanging from the garage beam, and it was creaking and slightly bowing under my weight, and even a small 125 is double that, so decided not to chance it.

Well, I've just ordered a pair of paddock stands. I've got 4 bikes, and 3 of them have small bits that've been neglected due to not having any, so for 40 quid I can't really justify not buying them.

Are they as easy to use by yourself as they look? From what I can tell the important points are get it as upright as you can, rear stand first, and then the front?

Think I'll practice with the CG first, the kawasaki I'm not looking forward to, needs a new side stand, as the current one is bent so it leans at a 30 degree angle!
