I was out on the SV today and someone stopped beside me on a bike at some lights. Had a brief chat with the owner/rider; the bike was an FZR250 Cool From what I can gather (not too easy to hear with lid on), she had just dusted it off after a long stint at the back of the garage and just getting used to it again!

I was very jealous, the FZR250 and moreover the CBR250 were bikes I REALLY wanted to ride when I-were-a-lad, the small in-line 4 screaming at some ludicrous 18,000rpm ... bliss!

I should have offered a swap for my SV ... Very Happy

What classic/iconic bikes do you guys wish you could have a go on?

It may not have been this exact model, but here is a google pic of a similar looking FZR250 ...

Well you learn something new every day... I didn't even know there was such a thing as an FZR 250. But I would love to have a go on any IL4 250.

The RD250/350LC is something I have wanted a go on for ages Wub

Any of the older IL4 250's for me, BTW the Yammy is my favourite 250, not the fastest revving and not the fastest in a straight line, but it's just something about it I adore, a gt380 would be cracking fun to ride, anything with a two stroke engine bigger than 125, even smaller than... I wouldn't mind a Puch Maxi.

I'd also quite like an SDR 200, just a small two stroke I can thrash around for a bit, I might have to start buying bikes riding them for a month and then selling them on again before I get too attached or crash them and send their value through the floor.

As I did the small/middle sized two strokes I would have to go the other way.....

A Kawa H1 or H2 to see if they were as scary as everyone says.
A Z1300 six, had a lift on the back of one once and scared the bejesus out of me.
XS1100 for the same resaon as the H1
1984 GSXR 750....

Starting to see a pattern of large engines and scary handling ... might say something about my state of mind!

An RC30 or Bimota DB1 just because!

You call it a Tourer because it's dog slow, not exactly a GRAND one when you consider it's bigger brothers the 550 and 750 Kettle, both again relatively slow but comfy.

That's what I said, ...dog slow. I had a T500 when the triples came out , that was as "grunty" and comfy as them and as fast as the 750 let alone the 550. Suzuki lost it with GT models.
Lovely looking bikes though, I'm renovating a Kettle at the moment.

Gotta agree, whilst an interesting bike in its own right, GT380 is an odd choice to state over the 'Kettle' Cool

I've been lucky enough to own a few of the iconic 2 strokes when they were cheap and to ride various of the little 4 strokes too.
Unlucky enough to sell the 2 strokes when they were cheap too!

While the 250cc in line 4s sound great with a race can, I always found the delivery a bit 'meh' - the power is very linear, but takes ages to get going. They are light but not THAT light and the cramped position feels more short than 'racey', generally.

RS250 is pick of the bunch for road riding, I'd say; though I'd quite fancy a 2ma if you could still get ex-YPM ones for peanuts (which you can't any more).

350 YPVS F2 didn't seem anything special - it did the job, but didn't have the 2 stroke 'zing' some did. Early YPVS versions may have been a bit better, but not massively so from my understanding.
Handling etc of course lacking a bit too.
You still occasionally see some new hate popping up for the video where I flip it, then jump on the bike while it's lying on the road Laughing.

I think one of the most 'interesting' engines I've had was the 87 KTM 350 enduro - 350cc 2 stroke with no power valve. It had XR250 sort of power before you hit the powerband. Then it mostly just chucked dirt behind you, but if you got it to hook up, it'd properly take off. Was never good enough to keep it on song for extended periods - the 200 EXC is similar, but a bit less power and when I was riding enduro on one I had a bit more experience so could make better use of it - great fun.

As I posted in another thread, this is my new item of lust -
https://www.dailymotos.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/beon-lanza-ktm-sx250-gp-todo-tributo-al-2-tiempos-12928639943.jpg
Take a modern KTM 250SX, which are still pretty revvy it seems, add in a 450 mono style kit as used to make a supermono from a 450 mx bike and you've got very light weifght with power not far off 60hp and should have a decently entertaining engine character.

Anyway, to answer the question - maybe one of the really big 2 strokes; CR500, KTM550 and so on.
I'm too pragmatic to be bothered by most relatively ill handling older bikes that don't really seem to offer anything different in the engine department.

Dunno why but always fancied a go on an FS1. Wouldn't mind a go on any 2-stroke tbh, just to see what all the fuss is about?

My mate had an FS1, not a pedal n pop though, wasn't massively interesting, 65cc big bore kit and still struggled to touch 35. It looked good but didn't actually have any sportiness for a sports-ped.

I made a list 5 years ago:

ZXR400
ZXR750 L, J, P (P1-owned)
ZXR750 H1
VFR750 RC36
VFR400
Zephyr 550/750
Z 400/500/750/1000
GPz 400/550/750/1100 ('88 550-owned)
GPz 400R/600R/900R/1000RX
GPx 600/750
GSX-R 600SRAD
GSX-R 750
VTR1000F
YZF750R
FZR400
TT600 (Triumph)
ZR7
ZX6R (636)
CB750 (Freddie '80-'82)
CZ 250/471; 150 (post war)
CB400SF (NC27-owned)
CBX550
VF1000F/750F/1000R/400
RGV 250 Gamma
NS400R
CBR900RR ('93)
R45/65 (BMW)

As you can see, there are only bikes that are possible to get for reasonable money. No crap like NR 750 with oval pistons, nor Rotary Nortons and so on. Well, there are also some rare motorcycles, but still quite affordable. None of the bikes is over 3000 pounds and I've already saw them for sale here.

Now we are talking! Cool Perhaps the NS500R though?

RGV250 and ZX7R are also ones in your list I have always wanted a go on ...

I have owned a few of the other bikes in your list (as you state, many of them are not expensive exotic bikes, so in no way bragging here!). I'll pick up on two in particular though ... the CBX550 and the chocolate cam VF750, I don't really have anything positive to say about the 750 ... the 550 was nothing special, but chewed up miles well, sadly it was let down by the brakes. I actually liked how butt ugly the CBX was as that was almost a statement in itself! Laughing

Well Blue, if you did your homework you'd have known there has never been a road legal NS500R. Lads from Honda thought it wouldn't be right to make a 500cc 2 stroke for the road, because they did not want to start the challenge for the fastest bike one the road.

But NS400R is quite obtainable and very affordable, there were two, each for about 2300 pounds, a few months back. One in Rothmans colours and the other one in the classic Honda paint job (red, white, blue with yellow patches on the side panels).I don't think I'll be getting one soon, now I feel like the next motorcycle should be a CZ 150c (early 50's). But, I change my mind quite often and always get what's available for reasonable money. It's never like I'd sit at home with drawer full of money waiting for a bike I like. Thumbs Up
