Hi Everyone,

Well after todays miserable day (Failing Mod 1) I am after a little information, I currently have a Honda Varadero 125 if I sell that and bought say a Suzuki V-Strom 650 can I book my own tests at reduced costs ???

i.e. currently including bike hire etc Mod 1 re-test day will cost £110 (as they say I do not need any additional training), if I booked myself its £15.50

Mod 2 including training will be £420 or £75 if I booked it myself, I realise its a gamble but you could afford several goes at £75 if required.

I do appreciate that the bike will need to be insured and have L-plates on and also need so way of getting to the test centre.

What I would like to know is am I correct and is there anything else I would need to know.

You'd be best to check you can get insurance before going down the route of buying the bike, you'll also need a bit of time to get used to the bike so might need to hand over some cash to the training school to have someone follow you round for a bit to be legal.

Or you could just go for the tests on it and see how you get on.

You're pretty much spot on,

L plate front and rear,
Insurance, MOT and tax
a mate insured on it / policy with riding other bikes included to get it to and from test centre (hopefully riding from you'll be able to whip the L plates off and razz it home yourself.

Already looked into insurance and its £300 fully comp for a V-Strom 650 on a provisional, apparently if I practice on private land that's deemed to be ok my mate owns a Benelli and has loads of land so may need tokeep it at his house then get him to ride it to the test centre for me.

Interesting. I thought that you couldn't even insure a bigger bike on a provisional license, let alone use it to do the MOD tests.

My mate did this, BikeSure iirc, I trained him for mod 1 in his works compound, no public access, fenced and gated off ma lord, rode the bike to the test centre for his mod 1, he had half a days training with a local school for mod 2, I rode his bike to test centre and he passed, just.

He was too chicken to take me home on the back so I rode it back too.

That's cheaper than some 125 quotes!

Might be worth checking if there would be a surcharge for informing them that you've passed your test in a couple of weeks time as ''technically'' it's a ''new'' policy as your licence changes.

Yeh that's a good point I will look into that, I am still going to do the retest first with the training company then go from there I think.
