I have an old Carrera Vengeance Magnesium road bike which as shimano 105 groupset (2x9 speed). I can't get on with the drop bars so want to convert to flat bars for as cheaply as possible.

My question is, can I use any shimano shifters as long as they are 9 speed (and 2 speed for the front)? I'm guessing brakes will be easier, can I use any old brake levers?

The levers are a piece of piss and if you use the bog standard shimano ones, they come complete with all the cabling you need too.

When I converted Mrs stinkwheels old racer bike to flats for use as a cargo bike I used a set of Tiagra levers. They work nicely.

The website below seems to imply the R770 or R780 shifters should work with 105.

Thanks for that - So can I just use those shifters, I mean, chop the flight deck ones off and wire up these? I don't want to have to change the front mech and all that business!

Such was the impression I got from the shimano website. See if it reads the same way to you. Do remember they have been making 105 for a very long time. I don't know if it's all the same.

Consensus seems to be any shimano 9 speed rear would be fine but the fronts need to be road specific, an MTB shifter will not work properly.

I would probably undo rather than chop off the existing shifters.

Failing all, I bet you could use one of the old fashioned bar-mounted friction levers for the front. They aren't indexed but it's not like you are picking up and dropping rings very frequently anyway.

Cheers Stinkers - I have also just found this out myself (rear is ok but road and MTB front mech are not compatible). As you said, I'll just get an old school friction one for the front.
