Hello Great BCF.

I don't have a Dad so you lot can be my internet Dad and help me with my question.

I'm not a DIY-er, I'm a trier. I have a mirror to put up on the bathroom wall but it needs screwing onto the wall. I think the wall is plaster over plasterboard, what would be the best way to do this job? Would a good quality screw hold in place or should I drill a hole and use a wall plug?

Plaster screw. They look savage, but they're pretty good. If you've never used one before, practise on something before you put it up.

Oh, and make sure there's no electric behind before you drill anything. Clues are: Sockets below (although in a bathroom you might not find one) or on the other side of the wall, light fittings above, etc etc. wires tend to be vertical but you can't guarantee some DIY numpty hasn't bodged something in the past. Smile

First, screw the plaster screw into the wall, then screw your mirror into the plaster screw.

Persimmon Homes are good at that. Laughing

When putting the plasterboard plugs into the wall, I've found it's better if you snap the end of the plug off as if there's not much space between the plasterboard and the breeze blocks then the end of the plug will hit the breeze blocks and won't go in far enough.

Make a pilot hole first then use a plasterboard fixing like the ones above Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info guys. I've only ever built furniture and messed with my bike and car. Never touched anything "man-like" in the house.

If its a mirror for the bathroom I'd use CT1 Sealant Adhesive, love the stuff and once its stuck its not coming off but you have time to slide it around to get it in place before it goes off, I use it on my round bathroom mirror as I didn't want to mess around drilling into tiles or see the silly clips that hold it on the wall, been up 6 months and not budged.

If its plasterboard/drywall thats been skimmed over you'll know because it will sound hollow, if so its either attached to wooden studs or stuck to the brick with adhesive. So you can find the stud and screw straight into that with a screw but I doubt the studs is in the right place for your mirror, so other option is to use dry wall plugs/anchors. Mark where you want holes, drill correct size hole for plug, push plug in and screw the screw into the plug. If its Hard wall plaster then you drill into it same as above but use standard plugs
