Rattly car engine

Hi guys,

I have a little 2007 Citroen C2 'by Loeb' and have an issue with it. I believe under he tarty paint and stickers it's the 1.6 VTS with the 125hp engine, not the 110 in the originals....

Anyway, I digress. When cold, the engine seem to have a very loud rattle (clatter clatter clatter) when coming off the power. When stationary it ticks over fine, no rattles. When accelerating it's fine, no unusual noises. As soon as I ease off the gas, again clatter clatter clatter. If I push the clutch in, it stops. After about a mile (if that) it stops and everything is fine.

There's no loss of power, no handling problems, no lights on the dash. It had a full oil change on Christmas Day so not low. It's been doing it for, well 2-3 years! Cant be too bad if it's not killed the car yet!

I've had a mechanic mate say the usual "it's French innit..." but it's just getting to me. It's the only thing that bugs me about the car, I love it apart from that!

Anyone got any suggestions?

Is it engine noise or gearbox noise? Can you provoke it any other way? Has the gearbox oil ever been changed (or even checked)?

Ummm No idea, I would assume gearbox if it's no happening while idle.


As for the gearbox oil, I've never checked, but would have hoped it'd be done when it was serviced (not by me). So I can only assume 'no'...

I would suspect that 90% of places won't bother touching the gearbox oil for a service.

Could be other things. A mile does seem far too soon for the gearbox oil to be warmed up. Pushing the clutch down is disconnecting the engine from the road but not the gearbox. If the noise disappears when you press the clutch if suggests the engine.

As an aside, full oil change on Christmas day means it has had 7 months to get low!

A quick Google would suggest these engines came with a sealed gearbox. Not that it means anything.

I hav etopped the oil up once, it was about mid-way.

This had been happening since pre-oil change and when the oild has been freshly changed.

Clutch was changed about a month ago, this didn't make any difference...

Might just trade it in, after a few mile drive!

Ah, gearbox sealed for death. The 4wd transfer box on the Jaguar we have is similarly afflicted and they are known for failing (which will pretty much write off any of the older ones now). Utterly stupid idea just to save a nominal amount when building the cars.

It may be a fckld clutch component or driveshaft bearing......either way its French so if it croaks at least you all look stylish waiting for the recovery van.

Check the clutch service history.

We used to have a C1, luckily it was a Toyota really so cannot really "stick up" for the Citroen brand as it was only badged a Citroen.

Don't get defensive - I'm purely talking about them as cars which don't have a solid reliability record.

My mate's missus will never buy another Vauxhall due to similar bad reliability experiences, electrical gremlins, and half interested at best dealers.

She also has this theory that you should never buy a brand new car model that has just been launched, as it's un-proven. Buying one when they have been out on sale for 3-4years, she says gives plenty of time for common issues to appear and design faults to become aware of.

She now drive's a just add fuel PCP lease car, like so many people do now, and has no real affinity for brands or particular models now.

I like my car's to be 20-3oyears old, and have no idea what I'd choose if I had to go with a newish car?

The soon to be released Honda CTR mk3 sounds fairly interesting however, and I've always thought the Skoda Fabia VRS TFSI sounded interesting, but is a reasonable value and pretty subtle hot hatch. I'd certainely choose one over a Audi S3, BMW 135i or Golf R any day.

I know that VAG group cars are no it what they are cracked up to be.
Still... Citroens do not have a good record - we test drove a DS3 when buying our current main car and it just felt cheap.

Being French it wouldn't surprise me if it had a plastic release bearing. They fail. Most probably a driveshaft on the way out or possibly an engine mount.

Clutch release bearing starting to fail, common as fuck on shitrons. Probably need a tunnel whilst doing the clutch also.
