Red = traffic
Yellow = motorcycle route

The route seems both safe and necessary (for making progress/filtering) by my interpretation of the rules of entering chequered boxes with broken borders. In case it isn't clear in pic, it is a broken line around the boxes.

So:

A - would you consider this route legal?
B - would you be comfortable using it in front of a cop car?

Cheers.

Yes.

From the highway code/gov website:

You should not enter any hatched area bounded by a broken line unless it is safe to do so.

i'd imagine your frequency of flat tyres may well go up though, always full of crap hatched areas in layouts like that..

Don't see why not. I agree with Shinigami, only potential problem being possible crap on the chevron area, could cause a puncture, but if it looks clean enough, I'd filter that.

Yes. As long as the traffic was nearly stationary. If it was moving well, I'd slot into it and join as normal because people do stuipd and unpredictable shit when joining roads from an onslip.

All the bloody time!

I commute along the Highway (East London), which is a suburban dual carriage way with a broke line bounded hatched area in the middle. Always filter down there, usually safe and less cramped than going down middle of two lanes. Also, if the oncoming lanes happen to be clear, I can filter wide.

Done this a number of times, in front of cops. No problems, all the bikers down here do this. In fact on occasion I've followed bike cops doing the very same...

In the OP example on a slip road, I say definitely. Slip roads are usually pretty spacious and if it helps you merge in earlier, before all the cars get frustrated and start shoving their way in and it gets messy, why not. That said, I've seen quite a few slip roads with solid bounded hatched areas, where one shouldn't do this.

Why have you gone so far on the O/S when you knew you had to filter left? I would have chosen a central path, no issue then with or without Dibble
Marjay is on the right lines, solid whites around the hatching, that's definitely points and minus monies

It isn't necessary. You just want to do it to get to home before the others do. Necessary in this case would be if a vehicle had broken down or you were directed to do so by road works or the police.

On saying that though I would probably do it as long as it wasn't a piss take and the lines were broken.

Use the basics of is it safe ( for you and for others) is it legal (Read up on it to find out) Necessary (being late home or missing the chippy isn't really covered by it) is in convenient ( to others, not to yourself, does it put others out, make them move or hold them up) If it ticks all the boxes then you shouldn't need to ask on here.

Wouldn't say necessary but it isn't dangerous. I'd do it. Obviously if cars are doing close to the speed limit, ANY filtering is frowned upon but those are broken white lines which can be utilised by us.

The definition of necessary is what I can't find. Do you have a source for a definition of what is considered "necessary"? I have yet to find anything that isn't quite vague.

My potentially liberal interpretation is that it is necessary to use that area in order to overtake, hence legal.

EDIT: My source is second, third, fourth etc hand accounts of clarification apparently requested by MAG/BMF on the definition of necessary. They apparently say that entering to filter is acceptable, but I cannay get hold of the MAG/BMF article.

Only legal sources I have found say necessary, without defining what is/is not necessary.

Yes, every day. However it looks wide enough in pic for filtering in lane although this will probably involve going both sides of cars.

If plod see you hesitate when filtering past them, thats a good indication you are guilty of something, and they will pull you.

What can plod do, chase you? Laughing

I did exactly this yesterday past a traffic cop on a bike that's not in my name with no tax/test or insurance (on my way to mot bike covered on trade policy) nothing happened.

You can cross a broken white line so yes it is legal. But not a solid white line.

This why we have sooooooooooooo many laws over trivial stuff. Common sense says wanting to get past a load of other people in the same boat as me and I just need to wait my turn doesn't make it necessary. To get past a broken down vehicle and keep the traffic flowing makes it necessary.

Stretching what is necessary to suit your own needs and bugger everyone else is why they start putting cameras up or put an actual Kerb in place and all are buggered.

Thumbs Up Damn right. Even if the old bilious ones don't like it there's so many of us doing it, they just have to accept it. Problems do sometimes arise though when we export our London practices to other parts of the country 'cos provincial plod just don't understand bless 'em...

No trade plates, I was a bit disappointed its usually quite entertaining having them get excited as they think they've caught a big evil criminal only to find I'm all legal.

I got pulled over by the met in my 106 diesel, before I had even got out of the car they had run over pulled me out and dragged me into the back of their motor. Jumped up little pricks thought they were onto a good nick no doubt

They asked if I knew why they had pulled me over so I said yes but why don't you tell me Wink they got a little knarked at that and said it was because I was uninsured scum.

I quickly provided them with my motor trade policy, they asked why I had one, I explained that as I trade MOTORS for a living I require a MOTOR trade policy. They suddenly looked rather sheepish and said well that will be all on your way sir.

Don't get me wrong Im actually all for the police generally they cause me no trouble but these 2 pricks were taking the piss.

I'd carry straight on the A35 and go down the Colbury Rd, it's much more fun (unless I've not recognised the road correctly!)

And yes I would filter there even with police presence, I reckon the worst you'd get is a talking to.
