This might sound a little stupid, but according to the Haynes manual it says the right side, but the picture looks like it is the left side. Does this mean the right side as you sit on the bike, or the right side as you are looking at the bike from the front? Rolling Eyes

Sorry, I am not very good at these kind of things.

It says disconnect the wiring leading into the engine casing, but there are wires on both sides.

On side has the gear selector on it, and the other side has the clutch cable going into it. The other thing that is making me doubt which side it could be is because there is no mention of removing the exhaust in the haynes manual, but one of the pipes runs across the cover and would need removed before being able to remove the engine casing.

Any ideas?

This is the left side as you sit on the bike.

Which would suggest that the stator is on the Left side.

Do you think it might just be a typing error with the manual?

There's a reason many people call it the book of lies. Take everything it says with a pinch of common sense.

There's a dirty great electrical cable sticking out the engine in that picture. Follow that, it'll be at the other end, so left hand side as you sit on the bike.

Its usually the right side, opposite side to the gearbox

@ comment above he states the pic is of the left side as you sit on the bike so if you follow the cable across would that not be the right side?

Left
The forward most cable with the 3 yellow wires is the stator cable

Also its obviously on the crank like most stators
and I cant thinkof a clutch that runs on the crankshaft
they're usually geared down by primary gear.

Furthermore, while we are on the topic of stator replacement, the haynes manual also says that you need to replace the gasket, but I cannot seem to find one anywhere. Tried the usual places and all I can find are complete gasket kits for the Deauville which cost over £100, and I am only assuming that this gasket would be included.

Would it be ok to refit with original gasket?

Getting a free gasket with a replacement stator sounds nice
but too good to be true sadly.
I bought some gasket material ages ago and always make my own
except for the the headgasket

If you're allowed to play with sharp things its cheap and fun
You might be lucky and be able to reuse the old one

If it doesn't leak then your be fine and won't need a new gasket. If you generally don't disturb the old gasket too much it mostly seals ok again

OP, I don't want to come across as condescending but are you sure that you are competent enough to be able to carry out inspections and any necessary remedial works once you have been informed of the whereabouts of your engine's stator?

The stator is on the left hand side as you sit on the bike. It's a big round thing. The other bit round is the clutch, which is on the other side.

There should a test in the Haynes book of lies that you can do using the plug (3 yellow wires normally) to avoid having to take the stator off.

Raffles and Robby posts bring questions to my mind

How do you know you need a new stator?
you haven't mentioned the simple, quick tests
which should always be done to confirm this.
As I'm fond of rantin,
Dont guess, Test !

You're honest enough to admit you dont know where your stator is
Fair enough, but this does beg the question if your skill and experience is suitable to correctly find and rectify the fault
