What to do with old batteries?

Got a couple of old batteries in the garage which died over last winter. Is there anything that you can do with them? Or are they only fit for the bin?

They are the sealed type.

Pretty sure some expensive battery chargers can revive them, or there is a way to charge them that revives them. One of the two

Either way, I have a few in the garage, another is my shed door stop

How long would it take to revive them? Had one of them on for 2 days and it is still has an orange light on the charger. Battery is reading 11 volts. Was also quite warm to touch once it came off, so I'm assuming that one is fucked.

Got another one on just now.

Think 2 days should be enough to charge them from nothing to full?

My garage is a couple of streets away from my house, and has no electricity, I use a collection of old batteries to power stuff through a cheap inverter, lamps/radio/kettle etc.
Old car battery for power tools if I cant be bothered to fire up the genny.
When they run out stick them on charge at home.

Are they lead-acid ones?

I've revived a few old ones by replacing the electrolyte....mainly car and truck batteries though. One...... I had on charge 12 hours before it picked up and it's been good ever since.

Don't give them away, they are worth money as the price of lead is quite high at the moment.

Take them to your local metal recycling place and weigh them in.

Hi

There are things that you can add to batteries to recover them a bit when the plates are sulphated.. Doubt any of them are more than a short term bodge but might be worth playing with.

I have sucessfully resurrected batteries by topping up the electrolyte to the correct specific gravity and adding a pinch of disodium EDTA to each cell.

I don't bother messing now because you can never trust it again.

I've read that if you totally deplete the battery by leaving it hooked up to a bulb for 24 hrs, then reverse charge it, then fully deplete it, and charge it normally it'll spring back to life.
