Just had an email from Paddy power regarding my personal data being stolen during a cyber attack.

Not sure what to make of it really. I make a point of never using the same password for different sites that hold valuable info, so that doesn't bother me. Similarly, I always pick different prompt answers when I sign up to these, often with a different answer for each site (I think my mother has 12 maiden names a last count). I like how at no point do they apologise for losing my info. They regret it, but not enough to say sorry. I should add that I've moved house since, changed phone numbers and email addresses since too, so whatever was stolen is well and truly obsolete now. Having said that, I just don't trust them anymore. I think I'll be closing my account with them now and go back to using the bookies on the high street.

Anyway, here's the e-mail, copy and pasted word for word. What does the BCF collective reckon?

There's not much you could do with the data. Maybe mildly annoy the folks who now live in my old house by sending junk mail to my name there. You could annoy yourself by calling up an out of date orange mobile number or sending emails to a dead account so they bounce back undeliverable. But that's about it

If nothing is more important to them than your security and trust, how about they encrypt your details in their fragile little database? Yknow, if your security and trust matters that much. Maybe implement a few simple procedures that prevent SQL injection. And maybe don't use 'password' as their dba password. Maybe.

Seems around 600,000 people or so are affected. They were aware of the attack in 2010, but obviously didn't think it important enough to tell everyone. Given that their estimates are that only around 90,000 are still active (have placed a bet this year), I'm guessing they waited until they had enough unaffected customers signed up, so that if those affected jump ship, they'll stay afloat.

And guess what... You can't remove your card details or close your account yourself. You have to speak to their customer services to do it. I wonder how busy they are at the moment.

I got that email too.

I had this boss I used to take the piss out of for being a total Luddite and tin-foil hat-ish because he wouldn't touch online stuff for banking etc or even putting his Grand National bets on.

Turns out he was so totally right. All that Snowden stuff came out and a shitload of things I was signed up to have been hacked in the past couple of years.
