hi there .
im after some help with my sv650 99 .
last weekend i was out on it and was going great as she always did . but it had a really bad eggy type of smell .
turns out the rectifire was over charging the battery . hence the smell.
but i only found this out when the bike suddenly stopped working on my way home from a ride out..
i lost all electrics and engine stopped running .
got it recovered to home .
i replaced the battery and all off the lights horn starter work . but the engine wont start . there is no spark from the plugs .
any ideas what could be wrong with it .
i really miss riding this bike

if the battery has been over-volted it's possible that the coils have too, and also possible that one or more of the bikes fuses have blown.

Worst case for you is that part of the loom has burnt, but you would probably know about that, or the CDI has gone.

First step is to check all the fuses.

Second step is to ensure that all connectors are properly seated - focusing on the ones near your battery - if you've changed the battery, you might have inadvertently moved them.

Third step is to grab a multimeter and check the resistance in your coils.

Egg smell is bad... I had that on the same-ish year SV.

Regulator likely needs replacing, but what could have happened is you have killed your stator...

Multimeter the 3 wires coming from the stator, should have 0 or infinity resistance across 1+2, 2+3 and 1+3. Voltage in AC should be equal on all 3 + on the stator wire and - on bikes frame.

On to a winner, I'm in Maidstone.

If you want I can pop over on Sunday and we can try my known good CDI. Might also be worth checking the stator. Do you have a multimeter?

Well if you can hold till Sunday, I'm sure me and a mate can pop over, diagnose and fix it. If so, drop me a PM with your address and a rough time. I've done so many stator checks now Laughing

New member living close to Paddy! You sir have hit the BCF jackpot. You can use him as a personal mechanic. Oh and tell him to bring his Striple on Sunday, he'll likely let you borrow forever.

bit of searching . but have found the cdi unit and rectifier for the sv .
if it fixes the problem then worth spending the money on parts .
as its in bits anyway , may as well change the oil nd filter..
still cant find a good loom tho . so its repair time , rip out suspect wires nd replace .
