Hi

have a 2001 CBR 600 FS1 (f4i). Bought this bike 3 months ago with 3,500 miles on the clock. Now has 4,500 miles and will ride to Holland and back next weekend. Seller said he changed the oil a few days before he sold the bike to me, and the oil levels seem fine.

Am wondering when is it best to change the air filter, before I ride to Holland or after I get back?

Change oil, filter, plugs, air filter and then follow the service manual.

Cheers, but before or after next weekend (ride to Holland and back)?

It may be worth mentioning that on a tight budget this month, so was going to change air filter now, and do the oil/plugs next month, unless the bike will be fine for the trip to Holland, in which case I'd just give it a full service next month.

Leave it then, air filter changes are a formality under UK conditions.
The recommended interval will assume dusty conditions such as you might encounter in Oz or USA
If it got seriously gunked up with thistle down or something at worst you'd get a slight drop off in performance not some kind of damage - unless it is literally crumbling away from getting wet, or eaten by mice.
Have a look at it, it will look like new most likely.

Changing the oil, filter and air filter should be a must do when you buy a 2nd hand bike despite what the previous owner said.
