I'll be buying a new bike in september/october, and could do with some advice. Been mulling it over for quite a while. After something mid weight, naked preferably, and it has to be brand new (I do too many miles and rely on it too much to not have the reassurance of a brand new bike)

The Honda CB650f is my front runner right now. List price is 6400 but I'm able to get it for a thousand off, so around 5400.

MT-07 was another right up there, but with ABS etc it's looking at being around 5900 I think.

A couple of others are interesting but these two are by far the most promising. Does anyone have any experience on either, or opinions?

Test riding both in the coming weeks numerous times.

Thanks all.

Brand new + loads of miles.

Why.

But, MT09/Street Triple, out of your price range, but only shit new bikes are in your range, NC700/750/MT07 gash etc etc.

Obviously, my opinion, but personally, having 2 far cheaper bikes for mass miles makes far more sense to me.

Reassurance of a brand new bike. Hmm. Not sure if that actually exists, it's just as likely to fuck you over in the middle of nowhere as a used bike.

I would get myself a good SV650 for a fifth of your budget and rack up the miles on that.

Its not just the reassurance, I just enjoy having new bikes, it may not make the most economical sense etc it's just a personal preference

Dude stop recommending SV650s, while they make sense on paper they have no soul, paddy rides one as a track bike as if he smashes it to bits it is one less SV on the road which is a good thing for all bikers.

So it's your personal preference to get a vastly inferior bike to a well loved ST for example, just because it's got a '14 plate?

It's not just 'economical sense', I simply don't understand it. If you wanted something special like an adventure bike, an S1000 etc I'd get it but for a middle of the road naked? Not so much.

Thumbs Up .

I used the SV650 as an example, although I'm unsure where the hatred for it came from. For a daily bike to rack miles up on, I can't see an issue. Itchy said himself it makes sense on paper, which is the fundamental reason I suggested it.

With the other £4.5k saved, you can buy yourself another bike for the fun timez.

Bought my current bike for less than £1500, and I do 500 miles a week on it. It doesn't break down because it's a tried and trusted engine and the necessary bits are maintained, and i don't care if I'm riding in the rain/it gets scratched because its 14 years old.

It's also a pretty damn good bike for touring, Sunday rides and hooning about. Personally I'd buy a simple naked for this sort of price and pocket the change. It just doesn't make sense to buy brand new if you're gonna fuck it up with loads of miles, especially if it's not even a special bike anyway.

Well, someone's gotta buy the new'uns Laughing

I personally never would unless a bike of teh awesomeness, and even then probably not.

I vote a 3/4 year old IL4 hornet with low mileage and some tidy accessories for sub 4k. Awesome value, great resale value and perfectly reliable.

Thumbs Up

And the CB650, I believe, is a Honda interpretation of an SV650.
Honda always manage to make their bikes extra-boring.

Well, you get the entertainment from being told about how the brown spots are 'flux' from welding, I believe Wink... which makes me wonder what kind of reassurance buying a new Honda would give Confused.

Always thought the "lots of miles" was an argument for buying used, not new.
If you're going to put 35k miles on it, it's not much different to buying a bike at 10k and getting rid at 45k. If it's a summer toy you're only going to put a few thousand on, then I can see it makes more sense to go for lower miles if you like that sort of thing.

If I was really insistent on buying a brand new dull commuter, the mt09 seems to be the only choice really?

Of you're going to do lots of commuter miles I'd go for the CBR650F for the fairing.

I have a Hornet CB600F and trust me, a motorway in the rain is far from pleasure.

Even in the sun, if you were in say Germany....on an autobahn Laughing , doing 90+, you would want the wind protection.

Don't get me wrong..... A fine summers day on A and B roads and the naked is just joyful!

If you want to do loads of miles buy a 1997 on wards CBR 600, they are brilliant, bullet proof and great for loads of miles.

I'm sure previous owners will agree.

If it must be new I'd search out an unregistered CBR600F-ABS. There must be plenty out there as they were still current this year. They seemed a bit "meh" when compared to the older F4i CBR but now they've released the newer CBR650F they actually look more decent.

They've managed to increase the capacity on the 650, putting the bike into the higher tax bracket, whilst significantly reducing the power output to drop it well into the A2 category. The looks are near identical so, unless you see restricted, I don't see the point.

There are deals to be done as they're an obsolete model now.

I have ridden the 650 after riding the new VFR.

The 650 does feel quite punchy low down and I'd be happy with that bike. It obviously comes in a dress if that floats your boat but the dash does look a bit cheap. That's coming from me with my ZZR600 from 1995!

Out of those I'd get the Honda, but I'd buy a nice low mileage FZ6.............. Oh I did! Shocked
