To answer your question I think it's a bit of both. First, you always shoot such stunts from the side or with remote cameras if you need to be in the "landing area". Second, the stunt went a bit wrong as the car overshot its landing zone, which would have been okay if there were no people in the landing area, but alas that wasn't the case.
