PostPosted: 19:00 - 05 Aug 2014    Post subject: Pilot Road 4 v Pirelli Angel GT v Dunlop RoadSmart 2 Help! Reply with quote

The time has come to replace my ageing rubber on the ZX9.

I currently have a worn out Dunlop Roadsmart 1 on the front which has literally nothing left on it. It came with the bike 3 years ago and hasn't missed a beat. I'm really taken by the Dunlops for this reason.

On the back I used to run a Dunlop SportMax until I had a blow out and found a Avon "DitchFinder 69" cheap from a local garage. There was a reason it was so cheap, the tyre slides given a little throttle and is lethal in the wet.

So. I've been researching my next set of rubber. I try to commute year round until the proper snow/ice sets in Nov-Feb. I need a tyre that is grippy in the dry and wet. Cost isn't so much a problem.

I've got a short-list of Pilot Road 4, Pirelli Angel GT, Dunlop RoadSmart 2. At the moment I'm leaning towards the Pirelli Angel GT's at the moment as they appear to get a good write up.

Any experiences with the above - or even any other suggestions are welcome.

Pilot Road 3... why pay extra for 4 with no increased performance or wear rate.

Cheaper, simpler. I have however rated the Diablo Strada, then the Angel ST quite highly, so if they have remained fairly similar through to the GT (which looks more "toury" than the other gens) then I'd use them.

However, PR3...

Dunnies for me. Although people do rave about the Michelins, I don't personally like them.

I found the RoadsmartII to be a good tyre. It didn't last as long as the previous PR2 but it performed the same.

Got PR4s on and I really do like them. They come in 3 flavors, I chose the touring with the harder of the available compounds. They warm up pretty quick, grip well in the wet and have a slightly more rounded profile compared to the slightly pointed RSIIs.

I did some brake testing tonight..as you do... they chirruped lovely.
They are supposed wear more uniformly than the PR3s...Dunno as I haven't tried the PR3s.

PR3's

I have done 6000 miles on mine and they still have plenty of life left in them, they handle the wet superbly well and have miles of grip when leaning the bike over. I have just got back from Europe and did a mixture of motorways, twisties, towns, rural roads and a track session and had no problems whatsoever.

When my current set need replacing I will go for the same again.

I've got a PR3 on the rear and PR4 on the front.

The 3 has done about 10000 miles and has plenty of life left. It's grippy and even managed a soaking wet track day and kept me upright! It's held up very well year-round in all sorts of weathers, though I admit I don't lean too much in the wet.

I can't say much for the 4, it's been on there maybe 2000 miles and I've only really used it in the dry. Does the job and I'm happy with it Smile

I went from Bridgestone BT012 to Angel GTs on my 600 hornet and think they are superb.

A lot of it is in the mind I guess as good tyres make you feel more confident.

Ridden smoothly I've never had a problem in the wet and they seem to be wearing well.

I'm sticking with the GTs now for sure.

Got diablo stradas on the blackbird, couldn't tell you about the wear but they are confidence inspiring enough for peg/knee/exhaust scraping on a quarter of a tonne beast.

Thanks for all of the replies. It seems to be a mixed bag after all Laughing I'll need to flip a 3 sided coin to figure this one out!

^^^Agree. You won't go far wrong with any of the modern multi compound tyres mentioned, infact if you find the PR2 you'll pay less and still get excellent mileage and great wet grip.

Roadsmarts were perfect on my 929 - great for 6000 miles on the rear of mostly fast A/B roads and motorway miles. Roadsmarts 2 will wear better.

Your bike has similar torque and weight to the blade, so that's where my money would go. Great in the wet and great in the dry. The profile rolls in rather than tips in, so quite predictable... as with most sports touring tyres.

Dunlops have gone up in price unfortunately.

Cheap set of BT023s might sway your wallet, especially if it's £50 cheaper than the rest fitted!

Cheapest deal on either. You won't be able to tell riding them.
