Posted: 21:30 - 06 Aug 2014 Post subject: Abuse from car driver for filtering? |
 |
|
Thought I'd add to the string of filtering threads this evening.
I was on the way to work this morning. There is a roundabout on my route where I need to turn left from a wide NSL single carriageway onto a NSL dual carriageway. Loads of traffic comes round the roundabout coming off the motorway so it can take a while to pull out there. Because of this there is usually a 1/4 mile queue coming up to the roundabout.
I have been riding to work for about 6 months now, after passing Mod 2 in November, my usual strategy is to safely and steadily pass to the right of the traffic, and when about 3 cars from the give way line, wait near a gap, indicate left and pull in to the traffic, and turn left in the usual way. All nice and easy no aggressive riding - usually works fine.
Except this morning I had the impression a renault driver behind the gap didn't want to let me in to the queue. By this time I was more or less in front of him, so when the gap opened up, I pulled into the gap but he kept moving, definitely didn't want to let me in. So by now I was stopped in front of him in the traffic. Then I noticed an ape-like gentleman behind me with a very angry face leaning out of his open cage window shouting abuse at me.
I turned round and asked him to repeat himself as I genuinely didn't hear what he had said, but I am sure it wasn't very polite. I looked in front and the traffic had cleared. Looked in my mirror to move off and noticed this guy had actually got out of his car on a main road and was making his way towards me. I had a gap in traffic so just caned it off up the dual carriageway. I expect I was doing 70 before he had even shut himself back in his car. I didn't see him again - not even in my mirror.
First time I've ever had any crap like this- I thought it was pretty well understood that if you just give way to filtering bikes they are never going to cause you any real hold up. Took me a bit by surprise tbh. Anyone ever experienced this sort of thing?
Luckily I've been able to shrug it off and was able to get away from him. But if that had happened when I used to go out on my L-plates nervous as hell it probably would have put me off riding. Thanks for reading, just wanted to share this somewhere, can't tell my wife stuff like this as she will just tell me to go to work in the car 'like a normal person'! |

Yeah I filter a fair bit, I have to when getting out of two towns on the coast to go to work. A lot of drivers don't like it, especially if you filter up red lights and pull away, had a few people try to overtake me doing this, one idiot nearly caused an accident so when he got stuck at the next set of lights behind a couple of transits I was sure to stop briefly, shout "WANKER!" at him and filter past to the head of the queue. There's other stuff like drivers who will stick below the speed limit to goad you into passing them, then speed up and try and block when they look in the rear views and see you making a move. Huge problem for people like me currently stuck on a 125, less so when bigger bikes with their shit-the-bed fast acceleration are trying it.
It's a kind of resentment that can be separate from rider ability, it's the very fact that bikes are smaller and more nimble therefore can fit in gaps the cars can't and generally be willing to take a few more risks to "make progress". I regularly have to filter up on the approach to a staggered multi-light roundabout which can tail back for a mile otherwise I'd be late for work, lot of people don't care for it when you try and pull back in. Tough. They made their choice with their cage, they can either put up with it or join us and find what all the fuss is about.
The overall advice from this fairly inexperienced rider is, fuck 'em. Ride as safe as you can but don't let cars bully you. Own your space, don't ride in the gutter, don't take stupid risks and if you doubt - don't do it! ____________________ .

I had someone do similar on the motorway last night,
As it's normally very slow I'll get nearly to the end of the slip road and then find a gap and slip in, if it's not a big gap I'll sit next to it until the driver accepts that I'm there and lets me in, 99% of the time the response is "bike, he'll be gone in a min"
had a micra sit his bonnet next to me for a good few meters of stop start until the gap in front opened enough for me to get across and change lanes heading for the gap between lanes 2&3
In the situation you describe I usually just carry on up the middle, usually manage to get in a gap in front of the car in front of the one who tried to stop you. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Problem?
Eh, it happens, queueing is a very British thing.
Sounds like you did the right thing, although there's no need to engage in any way. Just ride off. Go through reds if necessary. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Ah, I see I've hit a nerve there. Don't take it personally dude, it's a general observation, it doesn't mean I'm gunning for you just because you drive a Beamer, something I didn't know until you posted this incidentally.
Seven years anyway, and I've had problems with BMW drivers as a pedestrian, cyclist, driver and motorcyclist so ever since I was a kid, really. You get the odd good one but it's usually tailgate here, speed there, cut across three lanes without signalling here and so on. I'm not just throwing out stuff like this without precedent. ____________________ .

I'm looking to buy a 10 year old 3 series on another tab as I type this but anyhow...
Stereotyping is retarded.
There's a bloke at my work twice my age that is completely and utterly against bikes, nearly every other day he chats some shit how a 'biker' flew past him on some country lanes and how they are 'all idiots' ready to kill themselves and he has no sympathy for them.
The thing is though, I start getting sweaty trying to think of a response..
He's almost too retarded it's not even worth the breath.
He regards himself as a good driver and yet stalls it when reversing out of the car park, he's also gone straight into a curb the other day.
Oh, and once I saw him pulling out the junction and he left a gap an estate car could have fitted into and missed several opportunities to pull out...
People like this annoy me.
I almost felt like saying, you don't buy a superbike to pootle to the shops..
Not all bikers kill kittens..
Riding a bike does not mean certain death..
I almost feel sorry for you that your life is so boring and you've never experienced something exciting..
The list goes on..
One time he said to me 'How can it be safe for a biker to overtake me when I'm doing 70MPH?' As though he was targetting me directly..
I said it would be perfectly safe seeing as speed doesn't kill unless you fuck it up.
In the end I did actually say to the bloke you're sterotyping massively and you sound very stuck in your ways.. his reply was 'yeah well this is based on my experiences'
My guess is he's such a fucking shit driver he gets in the way more often than not or doesn't even see them.
It was good to ride to work today
Seriously, majority of this population are morons. ____________________ 07' Honda Hornet now full powaah! My guide on performing an oil change! |
