I'm interested to know what u guys think to this, il give u some background first. I'm 28, I work as a gas engineer for a well known gas company which mostly involves installing boilers and doing response work (a lot of driving).

Now I'm struggling with my appetite when I drive, I always use to eat whatever I wanted and never put on any weight, one of those skinny fuckers that everyone hated!! About a 2 years ago I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid (the opposite to what fat fuckers get). I was put on medication for a year and it sorted it out.

Now I'm off meds I'm fine but I'm struggling with my appetite, when I'm driving at work I'm always eating or craving food, I don't think I've helped myself in that I would stop in garages and buy diet Pepsi and sugary crap..

Do I have a sugar addiction or something? I get real bad cravings like for Pepsi/coke when I'm driving, I need to stop eating shit I think...

What do u guys think?

Sounds like you're more stuck in a routine of eating bad foods.

I think you should start making your own healthy lunch and stop eating shit...

agree, sounds like bad habit rather than an addiction.

Boredom could be a factor. If you are busy you don't have time to worry about being hungry unless you are really, seriously hungry!

The thing is I take lunch, normally consisting of a slice, a scotch egg, pack of crisps, a yoghurt, some cherry tomatoes and an apple. Sometimes il eat all this before 11 o'clock including my breakfast I have at 7.

I think I need to look at my eating as a whole as I'm clearly not getting what I need outta my lunch hence the desire to eat crap on top??!

Six months ago I reckon I was spending somewhere around £50 a month in the vending machine at work. Plus buying big bottles of coke and chocolate and all sorts of other crap for at home.

About 2 months ago I basically decided to stop eating crap from the vending machine at work. Instead I've been buying some big bananas and a bag of large oranges, and whenever I get a craving for the chocolate I have one of each instead. I've also cut right down the shit I eat at home, though probably not down enough to be considered ideal.

Anyway, call it habitual, or addiction, or whatever you like, but when I just tried to stop eating the shit in the past I felt like crap, constantly tired without the tons of sugar. The swapping thing worked really well for me.

I think basically you just need to decide to stop though. Nobody can make you. The constant media barrage about diabetes was the kicker for me, but it was very much a personal choice.

If you're worried about what you're eating, download a tracker app like My Fitness Pal to see what you're putting in and whether you're in the red every day or not.

It's difficult to cold turkey on a sugar addiction, as you still have to eat other things. Just cut down slowly, go from five chocolate bars to three for example.

I'm also pretty sure there's additives in fast food, I know whenever I have a McDonald's I want another one the next day, even though it's not nice food.

Given that the craving is for sugar (?) and you've had/have a thyroid problem, my guess would be something's fecked up in your physiology. Yes, it could be comfort-eating but it might also be a medical issue, so

GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!

Enough. But then I do take a 1.5 litre bottle of juice to work with me

I've defiantly gotta do something as it's driving me into a downwards spiral, I struggle with motivation for work in the mornings, I'm sure the shit appetite isn't helping that either.

I think one of the biggest problems is when I'm not installing at work the boredom creeps in, it's a prob really as I don't find the work challenging enough. I have thought about going self employed as this would keep me far busier!

Thyroid problems wreak havoc with your cravings, metabolism and diet.

In some cases of hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis you can be eating 3500-4000 calories a day and still losing 4-5 lbs EVERY WEEK.

With treatment the metabolism swings back the other way but the cravings and hunger doesn't and so you can end up putting on 10 lbs a week sometimes.

The thing with thyroxine (the thyroid hormone) is it is very slow acting, has a very long half life, so any changes take a long time to settle. That's why they say 6-8 weeks between blood tests, give everything a chance to balance out first.

Try to see a GP with a special interest in endocrine diseases, and if thats not possible try to get referred back to an endocrinologist. Or a dietician with an endocrine interest, but not just a diabetic interest.

If that is fruit juice that is a horrific amount of calories and sugar. Looking at the 330ml Bottle of Tropicana I had for lunch it is 157 calories and 35% of your RDA of Sugar.

For your 1.5 litres that is over 700 calories and 160% of your RDA of Sugar.

The highlighted foods are shit (assuming the yoghurt is the sugary shit kind). Processed junk basically.

Go back to basics - you need to eat whole foods which will keep you fuller for longer. Things like wholelmeal pasta, bread etc, with lean meats, eggs, beans, pulses and salads/vegetables.

Thats only one of the effects.

Others include palpitations, resting heart rate 2-3 times faster than normal (well into the mid 100s sometimes), intolerance to heat (20-degree room feeling like 35 degrees or warmer), tremors.

A simple jog around the park at a steady pace can take your heart rate to near-fatal levels (theoretical maximum is 220bpm - age... but moderate exercise could easily push it to 200-240, intense exercise like squash or 5-a-side football in an otherwise-fit person could cause a heart attack!)

So it may sound like a good thing, but really it isn't.

Yes I was diagnosed with Graves' disease (hyperthyroidism) a long time ago, been on meds and been given the all clear by a specialist.

I havnt been for a blood test now for a good 6 months but I think I should, I don't think it's the graves returning as the symptoms originally where feeling really weak at work (no energy) and itchiness oh and my heart going like the clapper as u mentioned.

I'm gonna get that checked but I think this is diet related, I've taken my eye off the ball with it, it's so easy to eat shit cos it tastes nice (sugar, salt) but it soon drags u down!!

Oh and your eyes bulge and pop out of your head.

And your muscles ache. All the time.

Panic attacks, anxiety, psychosis and paranoia are all common symptoms of a thyroid storm.

Cardiac arrhythmia, exhaustion and depression.

If it develops into a thyroid storm that is normally fatal unless caught and treated early. Usually requires admission into intensive care.

So really you ought to see the bad in this. Neutral

Yeah I'd just call up your GP surgery and say you'd like a thyroid function test done... TSH, free T3 & free T4.
Can usually be done the same day, it takes all of 30 seconds to draw bloods if you know what you're doing, should be a number of staff other than the doctors themselves who can draw bloods.

GP should call back within 24 hours with the results, depending on when the test was done, and if normal then discuss with him your problems.
If that comes back as abnormal then the GP can decide the next step... get you on anti-thyroid meds such as carbimazole, or on some supplemental thyroxine, or a combination of both, or refer you back to an endocrinologist.

Sorry, lots of blocks of text so didn't read the thread so this input may be obsolete.

Eating too much sugar (and certain 'bad' carbs) gives you spikes of energy which don't last very long so you feel drained and crave another pick-up quite quickly.

It may not be an addiction. It might just be a thing that's crept up on you and now you just get cravings because your energy comes and goes so quickly. Try bananas and brown bread/rice/whatever because the energy releases much slower. Maybe also try Shreddies because they apparently keep hunger locked up till lunch!
