Hi all

Just a quick one.

MOT retest booked for tomorrow, need a new drive chain for it.

Need a 428 NON o ring chain, ordered one from m and p online and the sent me a 420 chain which arrived today.

Any ideas where I can pickup the correct chain by tomorrow morning?

Thanks in advance!

Im in West london, Near Ealing.

The problem isn't the lack of places, there are plenty in London.

The problem is the time, it is 18.50, nothing will be open.

What time in the morning?

MOT booked for 10:30, happy to get up early to get to a place for opening.

Problems is it needs to be 428 non oring chain, I called 3-4 dealer/parts places before 6pm today and none of them had them.

Going to try the actual shop doing the MOT first thing in the morning as well.

Most 428's are non-oring, but other than cheapness I dont see why you would want one. 90% of bike part places especially those that are not proper dealerships will stock this. But it might not be cheap.

Pikey one from a 125? Early blast to wemoto?

The clearance between the belt pulley and the sprocket means that an o ring chain is too wide.

To get enough clearance I had to flip my gearbox sprocket, meaning the chain runs 1-2mm from the side of the gearbox casing (and has already worn it slightly) a thicker chain would wear this even more and start hitting the clutch pulley.

Its my fault for taking out too much material when I had it on the lathe but oh well.

Interesting diesel conversion. Interested to know what lump, weight and powaar. Pulley contains clutch, so cant be any smaller?

However, What The Shuddering Fuck are you doing with these welds Shocked That has an engine sitting on it Shocked Shocked

Not safe, penetration looks very poor in pics. I had similarly bad results with SIF branded wire.

Find some local bearing supplier. Most of these will also sell chain by the link.

Big pic!

Dont worry, those welds have been redone, I was using flux clored wire and it was absolute shite, I have much better luck with using a stick welder over that crappy mig machine.

Additionally, there are maybe 200% more welds than needed, so there is a fair bit of redundancy, I check all welds every tank of fuel for cracks etc, no failures yet.

ITs a 400cc yanmar clone, weights probably 20 kg less than the XJ600 did from factory and makes 10bhp. It uses a villiers 4 speed box.

Yeah the pulley is as small as possible becuase of the clutch

10hp?

Because he can?

It will probably do LE JOG on half a thimble of fuel, but it seems like too much work and too many sacrifices for a bit of fuel saving.

I'd rather have a C90.

Ealing huh? Billy Bunn is the only fella round there. There's Snob's place up near Hanger Lane or Motorcycles Unlimited in Perivale but I dunno whether they're still trading. Place on King street W6 near Goldhawk road or the Brazilian boys off Shepherds Bush road. I'd go & see Bill on Ealing road though. He's old school & genuine. Thumbs Up

Good job, well done! He's a bit strict with MOTs is old Bill but he's thorough & he's been there forever. It is our duty to defend these old school workshops from the rise of the crap corporate showrooms. My three favourite places are: Burwins in north London, Bill Bunn in west London & our Dave (davebike), in south London. Use 'em or lose 'em. Sod corporate showrooms. Boozehawk's thread on being banned from J & S made my blood boil...

Ed: I've just been reading your blog. Very interesting stuff indeed! I have only ever seen one diesel bike - an Enfield & I want one. Would have loved to have seen ol' Bill Bunn's face when you rocked up for your MOT Laughing
