I'm in the process of doing a bit of an upgrade and as such I'm in need of DDR3 RAM to tide me over until next month because I can't afford to spunk money on a whole rig at once.

My plan is to eventually have 32GB of 2133MHz sticks in there, but here's my problem. To buy this in 8GB sticks (As motherboards have a maximum of four slots, in my experience) I would have to buy 16GB of it, which is pricey at £60 per stick.

In short, is there any way I can get my hands on a single stick that I can then reinforce at a later date?

Is this for video editing/rendering as 32gb is quite a lot?

I do a fair bit of PC gaming and 6gb was fine for me but i also do a lot of virtualization and is pretty memory intensive.

I opted for somewhere inbetween with these which have served me quite well.

It's just for gaming, trying to make something powerful enough to keep for quite a while!

In one simple sentence, what size and speed ram do you want?

In which case you don't need more than 8Gb. Spend what you save on RAM on a graphics card that has 3Gb of VRAM.

Got an R9 video card on the way already Smile

I know I don't actually need that much now, but I'd like space for when I do need it, if that makes sense. What I want:
A single stick of 8GB, 2133MHz DDR3

Not a 2 x 4GB, as that takes up two slots.

When you will need 32gb of RAM, the rest of your hardware will be very outdated. Thumbs Up

+ if not using a APU, then there's no point in crazy fast RAM.

+ two slots = dual channel = way faster than single stick.

Hi

I work for a hardware wholesaler, and the only memory of that spec we supply is sold in multiples of 2.

All the best

2133MHz Ram is a waste of money and electricity. It won't be used as video memory, since you run dedicated GPU card with its own ram. I bet you that if you used 8GB DDR3 1333MHz or 1866MHz stick, which you can actually buy, goes around 60 pounds over here, you would not notice any difference in performance of your PC with dedicated GPU.

BUT again, it is stupid to run only one stick, the dual channel is a magical thing, I tried it with old DDR2 800MHz ram and the performance difference was very noticeable.

I know I've got no credibility here, but think about it and google some stuff around before you waste your money on something that you will never use properly. Thumbs Up

Volume of ram isn't going to be your bottleneck. Even faster system ram won't do much besides load the game faster. It's like getting a bigger faster flowing fuel tank for your bike, without upgrading the engine it's pointless.
Save your money for the graphics card. Getting more fast ram on the graphics card will make 10 times the difference.

Plot twist: accidentally bought a car so don't have the money for upgrades now... At least now I'll have the time to properly research!

Computer power gets much cheaper quite fast. You are better off buying an upper mid range component and upgrading more quickly than buying something at the extreme end and using it for longer.

Gaming doesn't tax RAM /that/ much

https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri?gameName=Crysis-3&itemId=11526&p=r

Optimal for Crysis 3 is 8gb,

I have 12 (because triple channel) and it doesn't all get used.
