Hello BCFers,
long story short, my left wrist has been in and out of a cast for about a month now. It will remain in a cast for another 2 weeks (give or take a few days) and while the cast has been off I am able to use the clutch and ride safely. It is now back in a cast, this one to be exact!:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t34.0-12/10595999_10152610303124264_1413454526_n.jpg?oh=e65fe0d58b35fc4457debe453eccae6b&oe=53E6F80F&__gda__=1407636126_18548db463bc64dac24e81c228ea8936

So if I can operate a bike safely does that mean I am ok to ride?

I'd say, give it a go...if you can do it fine. If anyone stops you and tells you otherwise, blame me. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

I rode in a cast. I even heard of people using mole-grips on the throttle and pushing that because they couldn't twist their wrist...

Razz

Legally you're probably fine (and coppers are extremely unlikely to notice or care), but if you stuff it isn't a bus stop full of disabled kittens and get rumbled I'm sure the insurance would try and take you to the cleaners.

If you can fully control the vehicle (be it a bike, car, van, bus or goat) then you're fine.

Ask your consultant or GP. Thumbs Up

If you can climb walls, riding a bike should be a doddle!

I remember, mid-80s, a fellow despatch rider riding around with a full-length cast on his right leg!; comparatively, in your itching to get back on the road, I see no 'arm in it.
Though possibly a bone of contention where John Q. Rozzer is concerned, yet who'd more than likely, with a slap on the wrist, give you a lucky break.
As said, the insurance is where any inflexibility may lie; you might very well find yourself being given a stiff middle finger.
(I know, chance would be a fine thing!)

if you ask and they say no you can't ride, they tend to say no to cover themselves....

I would work on this principle.

Get hold of a push bike. Ride it off a kerb. Jump it back over the kerb (properly.)

If you can do this without putting your feet down AND without screaming in pain, you can ride a motorbike safely.

Illegal on the basis of?

C&U regs 1986 S104: "No person shall drive or cause or permit any other person to drive, a motor vehicle on a road if he is in such a position that he cannot have proper control of the vehicle or have a full view of the road and traffic ahead."

That's the regulation; it was made an offence by RTA 1988 S41D.

Offence code is either CU80 or MS60, it's a 3 pointer and up to £1K fine either way.

My position is that "position" is a vague enough word to cover being in the position of riding while having spazzhand. It also covers wheelies, eating an apple, and sitting at lights while drinking a bottle of water (all successfully prosecuted examples). Smoking a faaaaag is apparently completely different and quite OK though, for some reason which escapes me.

Stinkwheel was stopped for riding a bike while standing on the pegs. It would have been the same "offence" if he hadn't dealt with it correctly on the spot, i.e. pointing out that his bike had knee grips for exactly that purpose, and laughing it off.

As long as you are in control of the vehicle it's fine as far as I know.

They totally flipped out at the fracture clinic when I rode my bike in for a checkup with a pot-wrist.

If you're stopped they will probably ask if you think you're in full control of the vehicle like that, to which you answer an unequivocal "Yes. Absolutely."

An outright, straight-faced and immediate denial of any wrongdoing confuses the hell out of most coppers. They are waiting for you to stutter, stammer and appologise.

What is the cast on there to do?

I have ridden with a cast on my right wrist/lower forearm with no problems, but had to weaken the loop around my thumb to have proper control. But the cast was on to immobilise the wrist and thumb in order to allow proper healing of a cracked scaphoid - so it wasn't really a bright idea on my part. I was fortunate in that I got away with it without causing any further issues to the injury, but maybe you need to consider this?

Couldn't get a proper glove over it, I just used a thin inner glove for a while, when it wasn't too cold for that.

My consultant said I was ok to ride a bike and drive an automatic car (using left lef) while I had my dodgy right leg - no cast, so it wasn't obvious.

Wanted that back up just in case something happened.
