Hi all

Been looking into getting some experience of working with offenders for the sake of applying for the Probation Service.

Was just curious if anybody on here has any knowledge of the sector or where I could possibly look for getting some experience (voluntary is fine by me) with offenders & social work. Already tried my local Probation Trust but they've currently suspended taking on volunteers during restructuring Mad.

Only have a few referees from the prison service & a weeks placement experience working in a prison (Deerbolt) but need some more long term experience (think they would like at least 6 months).

Thanks Karma

Have a look on here - not sure if theres anything suitable for what you specifically want/local to you? If not it may be worth contacting Clinks directly to see if they can put you in touch with organisations that can provide you with volunteering opportunities alongside offenders/rehabilitation/probation services - all should be considered good relevant experience if you're looking to move into that area of work.

Also may be some stuff available through here

Volunteering for some services like housing shelters may also provide experience with probation and the like depending on the specific place.

Hetzer's got a decent rap sheet. You could check into his daughter's welfare. She likes Sambuca.

Also look for work in Youth Work, look for areas which have social problems, gain some valuable experience there.

Also, NHS website has a few listing for 'various workers' within HMP prisons. Try Care UK (I'm sure they had listings for prison work recently) Question

Where are you based? Check online under you local area, such as: Sussex, Surrey, Kent: https://www.ksscrc.co.uk/

Also check out your local 'Unpaid Work Supervisors'...they usually want staff...usually at weekends. Training is good. Pay is pretty good too, if you can stand losing your entire weekends as usually work 8am-6pm. Thumbs Up

This is very good advice.

The YMCA would be a good start as they house a lot of young, ex offenders and working with them (as a key worker or otherwise) would be a good start. Ditto hostels.

To get an insight into the other end of the justice system, you can also volunteer to be an 'appropriate adult' or whatever the proper title is, accompanying youngsters in custardy when they get nicked.

Care farms that help drink and drug users would also be a good idea, for some people that is an important part of the rehabilitation process and having experience of those issues will also be helpful.
