Looks like he may have taken his own life after a battle with depression. Only 63, far too young. RIP dude. Good night Vietnam.

You sir are a prick.

And I'm more than willing to take the negative Karma to spread the word.

Brilliantly versatile actor... Dead Poets Society is one of my all time favourites.

It's tremendously sad that someone who can bring such joy and laughter to others is so tormented and sad themselves.

Rest In Peace, O Captain! My Captain!

They say it was suicide, that seems to be quite a common way how to die in Hollywood, these days. Confused

Well I didn't like any of his films - far too much of an American style humour. Shhh!

I will probably lose more sleep over the fact that 90% of the people on the internet cannot spell lose. Neutral

severe depression is very common amongst artistic people. People always seem surprised when a comedian isnt happy in real life.

I always thought one of the saddest films was What dreams may come. I imagine it was possibly the most realistic role he played emotionally.

Maybe the news of his sad death will get more people talking about depression, I know there have been a lot of posts on here about the illness. Its horrible and while i am lucky to not have it, I am affected by it from people close to me as most of us probably are.

It's really chapping my arse hearing people say they have no sympathy for the guy. "He had millions of dollars, huge house etc etc". It's irrelevant, depression doesn't respect bank balances.

When you've lived with someone with genuine depression and suicidal thoughts every day for a long period of time you'll realise that it's not about money, or status, or fame, or 'snapping out of it' or whatever. It's genuinely unpleasant and extremely hard. People who are suicidal do not think rationally. They often think that their loved ones will be better off without them. "How can they be sad over me when I feel so worthless?".

It disturbs me the number of people who claim to understand depression who then say they have no sympathy for this man.

Yeah it really angers me the ignorance of some people.

Particularly saying things like suicide is selfish, or that they just need to snap out of it.

Hopefully this will get people talking about the issue and raising some awareness, maybe some good can come from that.

Don't be daft, they'll type their "RIP" post into Facebook, maybe join a group about it, then get on with their lives.

Judging by the number of articles on depression and mental illness that are floating around on Facebook today I'd disagree.

All it takes is for the people who don't actually understand depression to read one of those articles and realise its a proper, debilitating illness.
I imagine millions of people are reading those articles, and a large number of them will be educated to some degree by them... that will be quite significant progress in a short space of time... and probably the most significant progress there has been. Certainly it seems more people are talking about and liking/sharing links about depression than during Mental Health Awareness Week or on World Mental Health Day.

They do seem to be floating around everywhere which is good to see. People don't understand when someone that 'seems' so happy commits suicide due to depression. A much loved personality like Robin taking his life may bring a lot of positives.

I personally got floored by depression and have experienced a lot of pain because of it, I've picked up a lot of labels (agrophobic, insomniac, panic disorder, general anxiety disorder, depression etc... I know how it can make you feel and I really feel sorry for the guy. Unless you've experienced it yourself you'll never understand it.

However I managed to get my shit together by seperating myself from my thinking brain and look at it objectively. Was able to see the negative thoughts for what they where and drag myself out with the help of my little friend Prozac.

Interested to see what will happen in the theraputic community from this point onwards. People will more likely take this seriously now.
