I am sure there are plenty of other places we can rendezvous, cobber.

But it only says "could" close.
It totally depends on the twats doing the stunts.

Mark (the owner) has continuously asked people not to do stunts, and for quite some time now (years). The stuntier (is that even a word?) bike days (streetfighter days, is what I used to know them as) are now often organised elsewhere.

If idiots continue doing stunts down the main drag/s in areas densely populated by other vehicles, we all know who to blame.

Can't say I'd miss it. Been there once and just thought it was an overpriced café cashing in on nostalgia that it didn't even earn (the real ace was demolished a long time ago).

What worries me more is the Police having the power to close stuff down without even a fair hearing through the courts, seems a bit Gestapo style.

Fun in a place where it's not ridiculously dangerous for normal pedestrians and vehicles = not illegal

(well, okay, not all that illegal) Laughing

I like the ACE. But, I don't like its positioning.
Years ago we used to ride in along the A316 and across the city to get there..which I hated with a passion, filtering most of the way.

Later discovered the easiest route in (and the most boring), M3, M25, M40... Sick

Not been to the ACE since I moved further south. Too many countryside places which have more allure than a cafe in London. Despite the fact its a place where I can meet up with mates such as HK and Hawk.

Ho hum...

Every summer there's a story about the Ace closing, and it's still there. Scare mongering from the Daily Mail of the motorcycle world?

No stunts - no point in the Ace anyway.

It's not particularly dangerous for pedestrians and other vehicles - and most of the pedestrians are there FOR the stunts. I think that makes it a 'social' issue, rather than 'anti-social' Wink.

The point of the Ace has always been a place to show off in a static rather than a mobile way.

Park up, drink tea, sit about swapping sprocket and flange tales, admire vehicles and lack of fashion sense.

Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014

The police can indeed now shut down anywhere they like for pretty much any reason they like, including the delightfully vague "disorder near those premises associated with the use of those premises".

That's not subject to judicial oversight or appeal, and can be for up to to 48 hours (from a Superintendent or higher). Even a humble Inspector can perform a 24 hour lockdown. That means they can literally lock down the building, and then, delightfully, bill the owners for the bullet costs of doing so.

The issue then goes before the magistrates, who must hear it within 48 hours, and who can then extend the shutdown for up to 3 months. Critically, even if the short term notice isn't extended, there is nothing in the Act to prevent the police from simply imposing repeated 48 hour shutdowns with no right of appeal.

Granted, the premises owner can apply for compensation later if they can show that they were not associated with the behaviour, and that they took reasonable steps to prevent that behaviour, which is clearly what the Ace owners are trying to do. However, unlike the fast tracked shutdown extension hearings, there's no such urgency for the hearing to decide compensation.

So it is a genuine and novel threat. Even if courts don't extend the orders, even if they (in principle) might compensate the owner for loss of earnings at some far flung point in the future, could the Ace survive a couple of surprise weekend lockdowns?

I wonder how the local out of town shopping estate will fare with their car park being used for various chav car get togethers and 'testing' and drug dealings?

What am I saying, of course they'll be ok Rolling Eyes

FWIW many years ago a highish ranking police person told me they'd rather let all the ne'er-do-wells and bad uns gather in known place(s) because then the police would, err, know where they are.

I imagine its royal fail who keep complaining, I sure would hate to be driving one of those big lorries down the middle of a stunt strip on a Friday night!

One hit the notorious KTM Duke 990 last Friday. God damn that guy has got some mad skills.

Annoying thing about ace is the few r125 riders with essentially no exhausts doing crap stoppies and non existent wheelies. Please just F**k off.

A bit like the way the SA police in the Apartheid days used to dutifully release someone after 90 days detention without trial, then re-arrest them as they stepped out of the police station.

Next we'll be allowing the police to confiscate vehicles just because some unknown third party complained about their use. God help us all if we reach that point.

This is simply wrong. It just doesn't fit that any one can just come along and take what's yours and have it destroyed.

The State goes too far.

Overpriced is an understatement but I suppose it would be a bit of a shame if it closes if only for the reason that it would be the end of some kind of era.
I won't be signing any petitions though, the two times I've been there I've been latched onto by some boring old fart droning on about the 'good old days'.
Not too bothered if some cupid stunters lose their playground.

FTFU... Thumbs Up

I don`t buy it any more for that reason.

PS. always worth a visit along with box hill but the north circular traffic is hard work even on a Sunday.

Out of curiosity I went to the Ace website.
I'm left with the opinion the more things change the more they remain the same (or Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr's "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" for the intellectuals)...

e.g.

Thumbs Up

Seems incredibly unfair to threaten to shut down a venue because people who aren't even the owners are causing mischief.

Having said that, maybe we should all start doing burnouts and wheelies around the Parliament Square area in Westminster. Worth a try, eh?

The fact that there's an explicit compensation clause written into the legislation shows that even Whitehall spotted the potential for abuse.

This ^ + , it was the same when all the bikes used to get up to Chelsea Bridge Crying or Very sad .
Piggies were almost falling over themselves in the rush to nick a biker in the end.

I live very close, its fine during the day but absolute knob city at night, especially at the weekends. Does anyone know if the bike ban on the local trading estate is still in force?
