Hi Im looking to get some on / off road bikes for myself and the missus, shes gonna be on a cbt, so im guessing something like a DT 125 would be ideal for this? any other bikes with similar levels of ability in both areas?

would also like some sort of 2 stroke 250 (ish) for myself, with similar levels of onroad / offroad, possibly able to handle a 20 mile commute when my r1 is out of action

looking to spend no more than about 1500 on each. is this a realistic request?

thanks

Lower you expectations of what it looks like. Off roaders are rarely mint, I'd be happy going for a 99/00 300 EXC. Tatty is the least of your issues, especially if the intention is off roading Mr. Green

Would wait around a month or so when the sumo riders decide they want to sell Thumbs Up

How similar? Seems like a good call, you'd probably get for less with £££ in hand.

Very similar, I'd say.
I've mostly stuck with KTMs because I've already got them and so have compatible stuff - swapped my Husaberg (owned by KTM) for the first KTM 200 and kept the SM wheels to swap over to the KTM.

If I didn't already have KTM stuff, I'd probably go Gas Gas as you generally pay less for a similar bike.

cheers, ill keep looking for gas gas's too then. most id seen of them previously had been offroads only before.

how far would you say is reasonable to be able to ride something like this back from picking it up? guessing 150 motorway miles on one of these would be dreadful!

I'd not want to do 100+ miles, probably 20-30 tops.

Would say van/trailer for long distance pick up Thumbs Up

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

For the same reason a derestricted DT125 won't be ok - because they make more than 14.6hp.
A competition bike will certainly be more capable off road, however.

If OP is looking for a legal never to be de-restricted offroad 125, why bother with a two stroke at all? Sacrificing reliability and ease of use for...well nothing really isn't it? Wink

Often lighter and with better suspension.
However, likely geared a bit too high for off road when restricted.

Aside from the power issue of the CR125, the seat height is likely to be problematic. I could only get one foot down on Iain's at the BBQ.

In all fairness, probbably best suited to OP rather than his partner. On full knobblies tarmac gets interesting and it's not a very forgiving bike when it comes on...not as bad as the EXC200, but it won't give a new rider confidence.

I thought it was actually pretty smooth. Think it's decided that my idea of an 85 for the road is out. Do want to try a proper 250 2 stroke motocross bike to see if it's like the 200 but more so Smile.
Really should sort the SM wheels out for the 200 as I was reminded it does have a nice character to the engine Smile.

On that, it's incredibly rare (as in, I've seen one for sale, ever), but a 85cc road registered 2 stroke could make an interesting choice. The power is likely a bit peaky, but it's light and got a decent bit of power.
A 140/160 pit bike with 17/14 wheels (as mine was at the BBQ while the innertube lasted) also is a nice size for the shorter and less confident, while having just about enough go for lanes and the like.

So..... Picked up a DT 125r for the missus today, had only been rebuild 4 days ago, might have pushed it a little too hard and ended up fishtailing down the m25 at 70. what a fucking idiot! 3 hours later and my heart is still racing. guess thats gonna be 3-400's worth of work to get fixed!

Maybe 3-400 if bottom end has been damaged. £250ish for top end stuff.

I wouldn't have been pushing it personally but you aren't me Laughing
