Hi guys,

Hoping someone could answer a fairly noob question.

I've just passed my car driving test, and ride a 125cc on a provisional license. Would any points accrued against my bike affect my car license? (Not that I intend on getting any points on my bike you understand)

Cheers

You don't have a car licence AND a bike licence.

You have ONE driving licence with different entitlements on it.

So bike offences go towards your 12 point total. Car offences go towards your 12 point total.

Thanks Itchy, thought it was a silly question.

Got to be a good boy for the next two years then as have a 6 point max limit on my license.

Thanks for the info.

If he's just passed, he will be on the new driver limit of 6 points for 2 years.

As said. Only one licence. Hopefully you've also done a cbt and it's still I date otherwise you are riding the 125 outside of the conditions of your licence.

How does that work if you have held a full car licence for like 20 years, but only just passed your cat A? Is the 6 month probation just on the bike?

I thought if you applied for a new provisional you could carry on riding? IIRC Alpha didn't need to re-do his CBT.

one licence... if its suspended you walk or bus but no driving or riding anything... or whats the point in banning anyone ?
iirc his cbt (dl196 which is on a separate piece of paper) lasted 2 or 3years and he was banned for a shorter period so it was still in date when he got his licence back.

There is no 6months probation, it's 2 years - 6 points total accrual on your first licence. If you've had any other licence before this one, it's two years from that one (assuming the new drivers act was even around when you got your licence)

Right, as I understand it, 'Banned' in common parlance, means you have your licence entitlements 'suspended' for a period of time; you don't 'loose' your licence, you still have it, it just don't let you drive or ride anything.
Suspension is imposed by a judge / court after conviction for an offence; length of suspension is prescibed by legislation with room for judges discretion.
Offences that accrue penalty points, don't have minimum suspension period attatched, you just get the points; but hit the 12 allowed under totting up... and I BELIEVE a 12 month suspension is the 'norm', though may be reduced or extended at judges discretion....
And under 'New' rules they talk of 'disqualified' which means that your licence has entitlement suspended, for the period set by the court... but you have to become 're-qualified' once entitlement is 'provisionally' returned after the ban period, by taking extended re-test for dis-qual driver.... BUT, you only need take one test and you get back all the entitlements you had before being banned....

Under New Driver's Act, you don't get your licence 'suspended', you get your licence 'revoked'.... if you are convicted of an offence that carries suspension period or if you acrue more than 6 points via totting up in the first 2 years of gaining your first 'Full-Licence' entitlement for any catagory...... ie; if you passed your moped test at 16, your NDA probation would expire when you were 18... if you passed your car test ten years later at say 27, having ridden 125's on perpetual L's the whole time... NDA would NOT apply.. clock starts the day you pass your first UK Driving test for ANY catagory.

But, get revoked... your licence is shredded; any period of 'suspension' still applies... if you got revoked via totting up, as you didn't hot the full 12, and the individual points totting offences don't carry mandatory suspension period, its POSSIBLE you might not have any period of 'suspension' in which you cannot hold any licence entitlements... and could straight away apply for a new Provisional.... If however, offence carries mandatory suspension period, OR judge uses discretion to impose one, THEN, you may not apply for a new provisional until that period of suspension has lapsed, or entitlement on a new provisional will have start date after period of suspension has ended.

HOWEVER... AFAIK... new provisional will give you a new licence number... any CBT cert you may have held prior to revocation, or test pass certs, such as Theory or Mod 1, will be logged against your OLD Driver's number, so in effect, should have been ripped up with your revoked licence... you should return directly to Go', do not collect £200 and have to throw a six to start over, re-doing CBT and any and all tests required to get any full licence entitlement you had or may want on your new licence as if you had never had one.

That's my understanding as best as I can fathom the various bits of legislation & government web hyperbole.
