So today I receive a letter from AskMID stating that by their records my bike is not insured and it's a legal requirement to be insured blah blah blah..............

So I checked their database and sure enough it shows the bike isn't insured.

I bought insurance from Bikesure/Trinity Lane, paid for the year in full there and then and expiry according to certificate is 23:59 on 20/09/14.

The letter was dated 14th. Rang AskMID and they couldn't tell me when it was changed on their database.

I would of rang bikesure but it closed at 1pm and I was out on the bike going past quite a few police cars today Evil or Very Mad

Has anyone had this happen to them before?

I've had no notification saying my insurance has been cancelled and none of my circumstances have changed either.

I guess I will lose a years no claims too.

I had this thanks to Carole Nash.

I phoned them, they sorted it.

I would carry your proof of insurance with you.

Much as various organisations act like the MID has legal standing, I don't think it has?

It's notoriously inaccurate and so on.

I THINK the bit of paper you are given by the insurance company DOES still have legal standing.

Best to carry it with you, just in case.

Hi

Chase it up, but in the mean time make sure you have the copy of your certificate with you when riding.

Just noticed that it seems the road traffic act has been updated as far as electronic certificates:-

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/147

Is your certificate a paper one posted to you or a printed off electronic copy?

All the best

Keith

I had one on my doorstep this morning too.

I'm insured with bennets and when I called they assured me I'm properly insured and are re-submitting my details to the mid.

I can't figure their angle though. How are that particular bunch of parasites intending to suck money out of you? Eh?

As of today[*], the only thing that matters is your certificate of insurance. Printed by your underwriter, printed by you, accessibly by you online, it's all good, eventually.

Anyone else who bawwws that you are not insured, be that MID, a broker, or Her Majesty's Cunstabulary, can jog on. Jog over there. Then keep jogging on. Then jog on some more.

[*] We all objected to the DfT's proposals to do away with certificates of insurance in favour of the MID, right?

Thanks for the replies gents.

Keith, the certificate was e-mailed to me, so an electronic one which I printed off.

Roger, until you had said that I had not realised that they are just a private company.
As for making money out of me, i'm not sure on that one either....

Subject to the understanding that the insurance is still active. I see a lot of fraud to ins co's so clearly as soon as they are aware that it is a fraudulent purchase they will revoke the ins.

I missed this bit, skimmed and thought you'd checked yourself.

Is slightly concerning - maybe a bit 'self justifying' to try and make themselves seem more official.

Well, now we know anyway, it's not uninsured drivers that are costing us money - the MIB spends it on sending letters out to people Wink.
(That and the £2.5m their investments lost last year!)
