Hi all,

I'm after a Kindle or something similar, mostly so I can read it when there's some downtime at work. I prefer to read proper books but I don't have the space to store them at home or work!
I've had a look for reviews but wondered if anyone here has advice on the best. Is the 3G any benefit? Are the tablet benefits of the Fire worth it when the screen is harder to read in the sun? I have an iPhone for e-mail etc...

So any opinions?

Thanks

I've had several Kindles, my most recent being the touch screen e-ink device. My missus has a Kindle Paperwhite. I went from being a chest-beating "only real paper for me!" sort of person to an ebook advocate. I now have several hundred ebook titles. It's great to have a pile of books all in one place.

In particular I like e-ink. The Kindle Fire is just a tablet and while I have used tablets for e-books - and I do sometimes read for short periods on my phone - e-ink is far easier on my eyes. The Paperwhite is better than my older touch Kindle and I would go for that. I myself plan to upgrade my Kindle to the next generation Paperwhite, whenever that gets launched. This winter maybe?

I originally bought a Kindle with 3G because I would frequently be on the road for a couple of weeks and I wanted to be able to buy books while passing through different countries without having to mess about with local WiFi hotspots. It worked very well. If most of your reading takes place close to or in a WiFi zone (home, work) then I you probably don't need the 3G. Nice to have though.

Kindle devices don't work well for everything. For some titles - such as technical books - the Kindle reader on a PC with a large monitor is a far better match.

If it's purely for reading, then get the paperwhite. The screen is optimal for this. I wouldn't bother with the 3g, not worth the extra £60 unless you have the need to download books on the go.

Argos are selling for £109

https://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1417317.htm

I just got one - nice bit of kit.

I would say that the books that I personally have needed for university are more expensive than a good condition used paperback off Ebay though.

I don't know how this compares with normal day to day fiction though.

I think I've had all of them at some point. I'm using the paperwhite at the moment, by far my favourite. As said above, don't bother going for the 3G version.

I have the most basic kindle. Love it for the reasons you mentioned.

Wife has 3g one and there is no point as I can load up plenty of books by popping into a Wi-Fi zone so no need to pay extras and use more battery by having 3g.

Know plenty of people with kindle fires. Seems like a half decent tablet but if you only need it for reading them no point shelling out for a tablet.

Paperwhite is nice, but the basic £59 is just fine as well, and that's £50 to spend on content.

I quite like the paperwhite. I read in bed so the back light is worth it for me. If I didn't read at night or in the dark I'd just get the standard one.

If you were just after a dirt cheap e-ink reader, not necessarily a Kindle, then Blackwells have the Nook Simple Touch for £29 (£31.50 in P&P).

It's an old model, running Android 2.1 but it runs well enough for reading epubs (Amazon format files would have to be converted), although it's not too clever with pdfs. It's simple to root, but is restricted on which apps will run on it due to the age of the OS. Possibly a choice for cheapskates and rooting dabblers.

Mmm.

I have a stack of trinkets from a Samsung phablet through a no-brand 7" tablet and EEE netbook to a Nexus 10 and a powah laptop, but when I want to read a book I reach for the basic Kindle every time.

E-Ink is one of the few technologies which has genuinely exceeded my expectations.

+1. Paperwhite makes sense not just for reading in bed, but reading on the sofa in a room where you may only have indirect lighting, or on a plane/train, or in a restaurant - anywhere, basically. I have used clip-on lights instead, but Paperwhite is better.

I think kindles are great. So bloody convenient and there are hundereds of free books if you are willing to troll through genres to see whats available.

I have a 10" and 7" tablet but to read books, a kindle is just way better, brilliant. Thumbs Up

I have the cheap £59 one.

I've also been known to try and press the 'page-turn button' while reading a book!

Since getting my Kindle, around 4 years ago, I've only read about 10 physical books. No idea how many ebooks, but my reading increased greatly, and I already read a lot previously.
One of the few electronic gadgets that would need immediate replacement if it broke.

If mine broke I would go for a PaperWhite.

I have had the nook simple touch for a couple of years (paid £29). I have read around 30 books on it, and can't fault it. If it ever breaks I will be buying another pretty sharpish.

I've always been a fan of books and never fancied a kindle thing until we moved house over 2 years ago and downsized. Out went the books and in went a Kobo touch. Took a while to get used to it but now I wouldnt be without it.

Upsides of the Kobo, It's cheaper than the Kindle is and reads more formats. Battery life if you turn wifi off is fantastic and turning wifi on gives you access to a basic browser (slow and black and white but works) and there's even a game on there and a notepad.

Downside. Sometimes it sticks and you have to reset (takes a minute) and, I assume Kindle is the same, when the battery dies you might as well be reading a brick. So if reading in work make sure its either charged or you have access to a charger.

To be honest, no point going for the all singing all dancing one. There are those that light up but realistically who used to read in the dark anyways? Just get a normal one or as mentioned, the paperwhite (if you are anal about looks) and when you get used to it you'll never be without it.

well...all singing all dancing is the fire for me...
books and browsing and all that entails... Thumbs Up

and reading in bed does spring to mind...

sure you can get those little clip on lights, but the paperwhite is
an all in one, and better quality imho.

For those who 'just' want to read as cheaply as possible your absolutely right, get what you like and immerse yourself in the E-book world.

Glad to see the Kobo has met your needs so well.

the Ebooks really are an acquired taste, but i think once you go over to them going back to just printed books is never going to happen.

Never needed to light up my books with anything else, either ereader or paper book. Wink

But if you fall asleep with the light on it doesn't switch itself off. My Kindle (with built in light in the cover) switches off after around 15 mins I think.
