Imminent hard drive failure

My laptop has started to play up. Its just short of 3 years old.

Symptoms are failure to boot, long time to boot, very occasional lock up and this morning a refusal to start with no hard drive activity.

Opinions?

I have done a full back up to the server so it shouldn't be too much of a chore to recover if I have to fit a new drive and I've ordered a 512gb MX100 SSD this morning just in case.

chuck it in a usb caddy, pull the data off that you need then smash it with a hammer

Then buy a 120gb SSD to replace it.

Edited while you posted.

Can take 5 minutes to boot which I consider a little excessive for a core i5 with 8gb of ram.

If you were behind 12 proxies boot time would improve greatly.

Done this last week tbh Mr. Green my internal HD was playing up, random BSODs so smashed it to pieces and bought a SSD with free next day delivery from eBuyer Rolling Eyes

Worth salvaging the magnets from dead drives - they're neodymium and are very strong.

They make excellent fridge magnets Smile

I use them to magnetise screwdrivers.

Put it in a sealed bag into the freezer for a few hours if you still need to get data off it, it's an old trick that sometimes works for a few minutes.

As already stated a full back up has been done, in fact its done nearly every night on auto to the N54L. This means I can run the recovery discs on the new drive then click a few buttons, go make a cup of tea and everything is restored.

Also the fridge trick only worked on mechanical failures which this isn't.

Then I'm not sure why you're posting. Are you hoping to save it? But you've already ordered a replacement. So bin the old one. Or dismantle it for fun/interest/whatever.

Open the drive, take the platters out, run over them with the powerful magnets provided inside from the VCM, then melt the platters with a blowtorch if you've got one, smash them up if you dont.

Well this has turned into a bit of a saga.

Acronis cannot clone the drive, just locks up. Even when used as a bootable.

WHS2011 won't do a restore to a smaller disc regardless of data content.

Tried attaching the drives to another computer, again won't clone.

Used recovery discs and now manually restoring over 100gbs of files via the server.

You can partition a drive smaller assuming you have the space, I can't remember if it was a Windows thing or a special bit of software but it is doable, I did it when i got my first SSD.
