hi all,
sorry if this has been posted before but i am thinking about getting a fazer or SV650 as a first bike, would like to find out the pros and cons of both a V-twin or inline 4.
Cheers

V-twins - individual character. Torquey engines. Maybe low-down on power compared to 4's of similar displacement. Smooth power delivery. Think of dukes.

In-line 4's :- Linear power delivery (if not a bit unexciting). High-revving machines compared to a twin. Think of R1.

Twins are noted for going through chains at a faster rate than 4's due to it's power-pulses.

I'm sure Kickstart will give u more on the mechanics of the differences or Ste as he's ridden both a Twin and Inline 4.

I would say 4s generally have a smoother feeling to their delivery.

Twins usually have less power, but similar or slightly more torque to their 4 counterparts. They tend to have a wider range of torque; or at least their lack of power and revs gives that impression.

A 400cc 4 is probably the bike to be considering as an alternative to the sv.

The SV will have more instant power... turn the throttle and go. This will make it easier to ride. However the 4 has more of a 'power band'; which teaches you to make the most of the power.

The SV is quite a 'friendly' bike, so make a good first big bike.

so i'm guessing that if a V-twin doesn't have a linear power delivery then its not the best for sensitive manourvers, like wheelies, not that i would consider one!

It does have linear power delivery... which is perhaps why they often don't feel so smooth... the 4s have more of a power 'curve'; starting with lower power and rising up.

The total spread of power is greater, but often has less lower down power.

An sv650 will be a good start for wheelies, but not as good as sports 600 which has about the same power lower down; then an extra 35hp when you've got to the red line on the sv.

When my bike hits the powerband unexciting isn't the word that goes through my head. It's more like FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK Twisted Evil

SV650S all the way if you not after a full bloodied sports 6!

Its amazing can do anything on it tour commute scratch, whatever. Low down power delivery is good, but it does seem to pick up speed noticably above 7000rpm in a kind of powerband, maybe not as much as a inline 4 but still noticable. For twin it is quite fast revving and is quite smooth, but still sounds like a proper twin when you get rid of the muted standard silencer, personally i have got a road legal scorpion fitted and it does sound the business while still being legal!

Fazer 6's are still brilliant bikes but havent had the chance to ride one so cant say how they compare unfortunately.

I have a fazer 99 model and I love it, but the one bug-bear I have is that the engine sounds totally lame. That goes for the newer models as well. It handles brilliantly, but it could be called a little boring.

The SV will basically make more noise and, particularly if you are bezzing round town lots, you may want the lower down torquey power of the twin.

What kind of riding you going to be doing?

Also, there are other differences between them other than just the engine. Test ride them, as a friend of mine said she hated the SV on a test ride as it didn't fit her body, but that will be an individual thing, so check it fits before you buy . . . . good luck. Very Happy

hey GJ
think that you are the first person i have ever seen to be honest about the downers of there bike!
going to go to work everyday probably the long way, through twisty roads. then on the weekend getting out on the open roads!
The one thing that i am abit worried about is that i am 6 ft 3 and the SV looks very low! unfortionatly there are no bike shops near me that let you have a test ride if you haven't had your licence for more than a year Mad
will try to test ride both

No still standard, mines a K2 model, latest of the old style.

I cant say i have noticed any wind or weather problem, no buffering or anything. If your worried double bubble screens are easily available

But i do agree much choice was a k3 and a k2 sat next to each other both nearly the same price, milage both mint condition, but prefer the looks and character of the older style!
