Mod2 complete today in York.

Made a bit of a fug of the solo ride directions but managed to blame it on 'radio interference' and got away with it, didn't do anything unsafe just took a wrong turn. Didn't get a minor for it so that's one for the info-bank for anyone taking their mod2.

Other than that, two minors for 'fractionally late' indicating. Meh.

Happy days. Gonna keep riding the YBR for now, promised the wife I'd space out the DAS cost and new bike seeing as we have a toddler sucking up our income.

My instructor said that you could pick up a minor for misreading the signs but as it was I think since the rest of the ride was fine it was a bit 'whatever'.

Well done. Must be hard to stay on the YBR but at least you don't have to make it wear the L-Plates.

You could still conceivably trade up though - flog the ybr for e.g. a grand, get a 500 twin. Insure it third party, etc. A GS, ER or even a CB - they all come along at a grand or less, and a few them are decent. In that they'll be good for a fair few thousand miles with cheap servicing / parts costs. I've seen good cb500s for 800 quid. Those bastards run forever and while they're not going to touch your il4 sport 600s, they a big step up from a 125. Just bide your time and one will come up nearby that you can give the once over. Avoid any with rust and you should be fine.

Congrats on passing mate! Feels good eh.

I made a couple of wrong turns on mine, I'm shite at following road signs that aren't telling you to give way or what speed limit you're currently breaking. GPS all the way. Think I picked up a minor or two for that.

I got a minor for fractionally accelerating just before going to 40 from a 30 on the same piece of road. Personally I think you're supposed to do that - think of what you do on a motorway slip road to match the traffic ahead - but meh, whatever, it's passed now in either case isn;t it?

Ah, the joys of having a wife and kids eh? You're a better man than me sir, I couldn't be tied down like that.

I didn't see the point of doing the tests without knowing I had a bigger bike waiting for me... riding the 125 for the last five days was just boring as I knew I was ready to get straight on my Divvy.

My advice would be, when you get the new bike, take it on the motorway and get most of the high speed shenanigans out of your system. I'm having real trouble keeping to speed limits knowing I can pull away from everything at the lights and be at 45mph in first gear within seconds.

You're making the right choice getting a bigger bike. Otherwise if you leave it too long you'll be too used to the 125 again and have to relearn a bunch of stuff, get used to the weight on corners etc.

Weight doesn't really bother me, the CBF600 I rode through training is almost the same weight at 215-220kg dry and didn't feel all that chunky to me. Although getting back on the yibber felt like a fucking bicycle! Laughing

Aaand I'll pass, 15k on the clock means it's due the hilariously expensive 16k Vtech service. Previous owner did 10k on it and I'm betting he knows something that's gonna make that costly service even more eye watering, hence he's ditching it.

I think the consensus is avoid high mileage bikes in general, except in rare cases where it has an excellent service record and any expensive work already done, plus a lower price as compared to similar models with less than five figures on the odo. It's always suspicious when an owner is letting a bike go at 24K or 43K just before that expensive by dealer valve clearance, trust me they know they've ragged it and it's not gonna be pretty...

15k is nowhere near high mileage, I have my eye on a 2002 with 38k on it for 2 grand and that's still perfectly viable. It's purely that service cost that's put me off, I could negotiate it down but I'm just wary of what's hiding for it to be sold off so conveniently close.

Depends on what kind of riding racked up those miles. For example, my 125 had 8K on the clock. Gentle commuting over 3 years that'd be fine. Hard commuting over six months is another story. The lower the mileage the better chance of everything being in good shape. My Divvy is five years old and had barely 2,500 on the clock (it's over 2,800 now, three days later).
