So, since breaking up with the long term girlfriend I'm no longer saving so desperately for a house, cue more monthly income to burn.

I'm thinking it's upgrade time. An SSD is definitely on the list with a 256Gb Samsung 850pro top of the list. Thinking however that this is going to be massively overkill for a the AMD phenom 2 x6 that I have. Will the chipset even support any of the extra features of this high end SSD. Is it time to upgrade the phenom? I wouldn't say it's too slow though, just running some outdated tech. I've got a couple of 3Tb HDD that it doesn't play ball with. Got no USB3.0 ports on the headers, silly little things that are more of an annoyance than anything else.

I'm aware of some fairly major changes rolling out soon. DDR4 being one. Some new intel chips. USB3.1 (although I'm sure that's quite a way off). How soon are these new arrivals coming over the horizon? The typical cliché question, worth waiting for or not? My current thinking is get some 2nd hand current tech with all the stuff I want currently along with the SSD.

Even over SATA 2, you will notice a big speed bump using an SSD. 850pro could be overkill for SATA 2, an 840 evo would be more than enough.

DDR4 isn't due until next year, and the roll out is likely to be slow while the motherboards become mainstream. Not worn waiting for in my opinion.

CPU wise the market seems pretty flat at the moment with no massive innovations from Intel. The main drive seems to be reduced power consumption, for laptops and mobile devices. Devils Canyon chips are nice for enthusiasts to get some more speed out of the chips.

First thoughts would be to put a SSD into your existing PC, as a startup disk, and see if the speed boost is enough. I did this recently with a laptop and it feels like a new machine. If on the other hand its not doing what you want then jump in an build up a new one.

You have some interesting choices to make at this point, not the least of which is: post pics of girlfriend, or GTFO.

did get an SSD though. Bought the crucial mx100 512Gb. Amazingly fast. Still undecided as to whether to upgrade to intel. In all honest I probably don't need it. That being said USB 3.0 would be nice.

I found USB3 a major bonus when transfering data from my cameras CF cards 15 mins per card turned into 3, when you have 10 at a time to do it really was handy....so handy infact it was USB3 that made me buy a new laptop!

Really wanting an SSD on my 7 yr old Q6600 as its boot up time is ZZZ

Why don't you just buy a PCI USB 3.0 card for the time being?

Wow. The success rate for pics or gtfo just went up hugely. Well played everyone.

Regarding the topic, as other have said. Get the SSD anyway and see how you get on. When you do upgrade that will already be sorted. I found a huge improvement when I put one in my desktop.

I also have a PCI USB3 card, it's as expected and I only notice when moving large files. However, when I am moving large files, it's loads faster.

Last of all, if you're just looking to spend some money, maybe get a new case or an extra screen in preparation for when new tech is out.

I have USB 3.0 ports, but they're on the back and a massive pain in the backside to get to. Could run a USB3.0 hub somewhere on top of the desk, just looks a bit untidy.

already got 3 screens Very Happy

already got a good case.

have a HD6850. But I don't really play any modern games. My only real reason I can see for an upgrade really is convenience and just to get rid of using BIOS and use one of the these UEFI boards. Although I have a fair amount of disposible income I feel like I should be saving it to buy a house or move out.
