 |
|
Hello BCF
Just a quick question.
I have a 12v socket under my pillion seat that is connected to the battery via relay.
If I found some sort of fancy adaptor, could I trickle charge my bike through the 12v socket?
Or am I over complicating things ... which is so unlike me
Thanks |

Short answer, yes, you can.
Optimate make the lead you need, but probably others too. ____________________ Current bike - 2018 H2-SX, 2004 SV1000s, 2016 Aprilia RSV4 RF, 2017 Sherco SERF 300, 2003 Suzuki DRZ400 (stolen - AY53 JUU) |

Another short answer. No
As it's switched via a relay, it won't be connected to the battery unless the ignition is left on, then you'll probably be using more than you are putting in.
Take the relay out of the loop and it'll work.
I use the plugs you get on an optimate, put a few in different places and made a couple of other leads with cigi sockets on the end for plugging stuff in.
A direct lead is what you want, with a 5a fuse in, if it goes wrong, it'll blow early. ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse? Ok so I'm not done yet
I'm trying to find a cable that I can connect to the battery which I can then hook up to a trickle charger.
The lead ideally will be left connected and simply tucked under the pillion seat when not used. But I cannot find a premade cable that has a cap that can be fitted when not in use, or any sort of waterproofing as my bike is currently outside. (Shed TBC)
Is it going to be easier to wire up another 12v socket direct to the battery and buy a trickle charger that plugs into it?
Thanks again
edit:
12v socket it is, thanks BCF |

I have one of these on both my bikes.

I don't actually have an optimate trickle charger - its a different one - so I changed the connector on the lead to suit this, because I like the system.
As you are wanting you can tuck that little plug behind a panel easily.
It's called an SAE connector, used more in the US but more common here now.
You can get a range of things which plug into it including a cig lighter style adapter or USB charger.
Be aware it is always live so don't leave anything connected overnight by accident.
Other than the charger... |

If you need a lead, i've got the bits and pieces here to make them, at whatever length and whatever ends you need. ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse?
